Martinez wants the money. Boston wants to wait. Richard Mackson-USA TODAY Sports

With no big free agent signings seemingly on the horizon, one name keeps coming up: J.D. Martinez. For the longest time, the Red Sox and Martinez have been linked. But after weeks of stalling, he’s reportedly moving on.

The outfielder is reportedly fed up with the team’s inflexibility regarding its offer, and would prefer signing with a different team, sources told The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal. Martinez is also willing to hold out until he gets the deal he wants.

The Red Sox are believed to have offered something in the range of $125 million over five years. But we, especially us, don’t know how true those reports are. However, that isn’t stop teams from continuing to paint players in a bad light. Last season, MLB crossed the $10 billion threshold in gross revenues for the first time. That would mark its 15th consecutive season in which it has seen record revenues.

But this offseason, teams are being cheaper than ever. More teams than ever aren’t trying all that hard to win. The Pirates are tearing it down. There’s nothing left of the Marlins. Numerous teams are trying to stay under the luxury tax threshold. But many point to the 2019 free agency class as a reason why teams aren’t paying up now. But that doesn’t really track either.

Because the teams that are going to be in on the big names next offseason are the same ones that are going to ultimately end up in on the big names this offseason.

As for Martinez, we’ll see. After all, spring training is right around the corner.
