PITTSBURGH, Pa. — The Pittsburgh Pirates today selected infielder Jeff Clement from High-A Bradenton, and will be active for the game today. In order to make room for Clement on the 40-man roster, the club designated infielder Oscar Tejeda for assignment. The Pirates also transferred infielder Chase d’Arnaud from Bradenton to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Both Clement and d’Arnaud were sent to High-A on the 31st when the club recalled Kyle McPherson and Alex Presley from Triple-A. Because Bradenton’s season ended on Sunday, the Pirates did not have to wait the 10 days to promote Clement to the big league club. d’Arnaud will join the Triple-A club, who kick off playoffs on the 6th. He could join the club after their postseason ends.

Tejeda hit for a .242/.292/.364 line over 54 games with Double-A Altoona this season. The Pirates claimed Tejeda off waivers from the Boston organization on June 27.

First Pitch: Wrapping Up the Minor League Season

Today wrapped up the bulk of the minor league seasons for the individual teams in the Pirates’ farm system. Bradenton, Altoona, West Virginia, and the GCL Pirates are now finished. Indianapolis finished their regular season today, and will go on to the International League playoffs, which start on Wednesday. There won’t be many “prospects” playing in those games. The Pirates...

Starling Marte to Rehab in State College and Indianapolis

Starling Marte, who has been out with an oblique injury, is scheduled to begin his rehab assignment tonight with the State College Spikes. From there he will transfer the assignment tomorrow to Indianapolis, as the Indians start the International League playoffs. Marte ran the bases successfully yesterday, which was the final step before he could begin his rehab work.

Barmes Compared to Mystery Players

Clint Barmes is having a miserable year with the bat. I don’t really care, though. He could hit .000 and his glove would more than make up for his awful bat. I’m kidding. That’s a ridiculous notion. Barmes’ inability to provide any tangible offense continues to weigh this team down. That got me to thinking about two players from the 1980s. They weren’t full time players...

Pittsburgh Pirates Live Game Chat

This Date in Pirates History: September 3

In his Jolly Roger Rewind, John Fredland recaps a walk-off win from the 1978 season. Matt Capps (1980) Reliever for the Pirates from 2005 until 2009. He was a seventh round pick in 2002 by the Pirates out of high school. Matt went from pitching in AA during...

This Date in Pirates History: September 4

On a slow day for Pittsburgh Pirates history, we have two players born on this date and one very minor trade, though it involved a player with an interesting career. In his Jolly Roger Rewind, John Fredland recaps a strong major league debut for a Pirates pitcher from the 1982 season. The Trade On this date in 1954, the Pirates traded first baseman Jack Phillips to the Chicago...

Brewers bash Bucs again

The Pirates were swept out of Milwaukee on Sunday, as a good day at the plate wasn’t enough to overcome another awful start by James McDonald.  J-Mac continues to drive Pirate fans nuts. He looked SO good in those two games against the Cardinals these last two weeks, but this time came right out and walked the leadoff man on four pitches. Uh oh. Then Pedro Alvarez made an error...

Trying to find some footing

The Pirates try to stop this latest losing streak at four games this evening with their second of three against the Astros. All isn't technically lost for 2012 yet, but it probably will be if the Pirates can't win these last two games against Houston at PNC Park. Wandy Rodriguez goes against his old club for the second time as a Pirate. Jordan Lyles, who's spent most...

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Houston Astros – Game 134

Ugh.  Still sick.  I blame the Pirates at this point, specifically James McDonald.  It’s always frustrating when a bad offensive team scores more than five runs and loses.  Get it together guys. The Pirates need to sweep the Astros.  No two ways about it.  As of now the pitchers the Pirates will face in this [...]

Burnett’s stellar start spoiled, hearts broken in Milwaukee

The Pirates tied the game in the 8th inning and headed to the 9th tied at 2.  John Axford got Pedro Alvarez and Josh Harrison to ground out to start, but Rod Barajas decided it wouldn’t end there.  He singled to center field, and Axford’s lack of command walked pinch hitters Michael McKenry and Gaby [...]

Pirates labor, fall to Astros

Astros starter Edgar Gonzalez hadn’t pitched in a major league game since 2009.  Despite pitching just 5.1 innings today, he looked like an ace against the Pirates.  Jeff Locke struggled a bit in his first start of the year, and the Pirates’ offense wasn’t any help. The Astros started the game with 3 straight hits [...]
