The Tampa Bay Rays activated outfielder Desmond Jennings from the 15-day disabled list and have him batting leadoff for the opener of a three-game series against the New York Yankees.
Jennings has been out since May 12 because of a sprained left knee. The Rays went 12-13 in his absence - the team is also playing without slugger Evan Longoria for nearly as long.
The Rays optioned outfielder Rich Thompson to Triple-A Durham on Tuesday to clear a spot for Jennings.
Jennings will wear a brace for now but says he's ready to play without limits. He went 3 for 15 (.200) in a four-game rehabilitation assignment with Durham.
Also, Hideki Matsui is making his first visit to New York with his new team. Manager Joe Maddon has the former Yankees star batting cleanup for his ''flair for the dramatic.''

After watching James Shields pitch for the Tampa Bay Rays last night against the Yankees, something seemed wrong with the pitcher. At no point last year did Shields seem to be so vulnerable. But then again, last year was such an improvement over what Shields did in 2009 and 2010, is this just Shields reverting to form after a career season or just a bad stretch? He is 6-4, which...
Wade Davis never played an NFL game, but he spent time on the Titans, Redskins, and Seahawks rosters hoping for a shot. He was a part of the NFL culture and a member of NFL locker rooms. He was also gay, though he hid that fact while he played.
Davis was profiled by OutSports.com, and filmed the above video with SB Nation where he talks about what it was like being gay and trying...

As a junior this spring, Shaffer, a 6-foot-3, 205-pound left-handed hitter, posted a .336 batting average with 10 home runs and 46 RBI. He...
Dave Martinez is expected to become a big-league manager someday, and he’ll be well prepared when he gets the opportunity. The Tampa Bay Rays bench coach couldn’t ask for a better mentor. Following a 20-year playing career, the 47-year-old Martinez has spent the last five seasons working under Joe Maddon.

Overshadowed, perhaps, by the Tampa Bay Rays' recent run of poor fielding is their recent run of poor hitting. They managed only four hits in Wednesday's 4-1 loss to the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium, running their streak of games without double-digit hits to 12. That is the longest streak of its kind in the major leagues this season. The Rays are batting .179 during...
It's hard to win with pitching and defense when the defense commits three errors and the starting pitcher allows a game-changing grand slam on an 0-2 fastball. That was the scenario Tuesday at Yankee Stadium when the Tampa Bay Rays lost 7-0 to the Yankees and fell back into a tie for first place with the Baltimore Orioles. Shortstop Elliot Johnson's first-inning throwing...
