Derek Jeter says his surgically repaired left ankle feels good and he expects to be the New York Yankees' starting shortstop on opening day.
Jeter was at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday night to surprise more than 500 children from New York City at his Turn 2 Foundation's holiday party. It was his first public visit to the Bronx since having surgery in late October to repair the ankle he broke in Game 1 of the AL championship series against the Detroit Tigers.
Looking trim and walking with a restrictive boot on his left foot, Jeter made several jokes about a photograph published last week in a New York tabloid that made him appear overweight.
The Yankees' 38-year-old captain had been bothered by the ankle since mid-September but said it was his choice to play through the pain.

Derek Eater? Well that didn’t last very long.
Yankee fans woke up on Friday morning to a horrifying sight, Derek Jeter significantly overweight on the back page of the New York Post. The Post’s report stated that Jeter had “turned to the fork” and lost control of his weight during rehab on his injured left ankle.
The report, however, was proven false when MLB Network tweeted...

D-backs sign Chavez, Nieves to bolster bench
NASHVILLE While blockbuster rumors swirled, the Diamondbacks tidied up their bench and catching situations Wednesday, signing free agent veterans Eric Chavez and Wil Nieves to fill reserve roles at third base and catcher.Chavez, who would figure to get most of his at-bats against right-handers while spelling Chris Johnson at third, signed a one-year, 3 million contract. Yesterday, one of the GMs at the winter meetings assured the songbird Gammonites that the Yankees wouldn't stay cheapo much longer, that a big splash was coming, that the Yankees are always the Yankees. It reminded me of the final scene in "Cool Hand Luke," where George Kennedy is fantasizing to the prison yard how Paul Newman is out there with "that ol' Luke...
The Winter Meetings & the Quest For $189M
The Winter Meetings will come to a close today and, if all things remain the same, the Yankees will have signed and/or traded for no one. It's been a disappointing week for Yankee fans. Yesterday was especially disappointing, as Eric Chavez and Jeff Keppinger, two players who were looked at as a third base platoon in 2013, signed with the Diamondbacks and White Sox respectively...
Question: Did Cashman know about A-Rod's injury before yesterday?
Damned if I know. But if he did have, say, a week's headzup, could he have made a deal or signed Eric Chavez? The price of thirdbasemen jumped yesterday. And right now, we don't have one.
Baseball news for the Yankees and Mets
The "Winter Meetings" has been so far not so fun if you are a Yankees fan or a Mets fan.
There hasn't been so much news to report on both the New York City teams.
The Yankees biggest news of the winter meetings was losing A-Rod to hip surgery.
A-Rod will be out for at least four to six months and won't be back until June.
Also, the Mets have signed David Wright...
