We all knew it was coming and this afternoon the hammer was finally dropped on the head of Tigers shortstop Jhonny Peralta. After his involvement in the Biogenesis scandal that has really swept through Major League Baseball for the past year and a half, Peralta was suspended for 50 games Monday essentially ending his regular season in a midst of one of his better career offensive years. Here’s an official statement from the Tigers regarding the matter: “We recognize the suspension of Jhonny Peralta for violating Major League Baseball’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program as a measure taken in the best interest of the game. The Detroit Tigers continue to fully support Major League Baseball’s policy and its efforts to eliminate performance enhancing drugs from our game. Per the protocol outline by Major League Baseball’s collective bargaining agreement, the Tigers’ organization will provide no further comment on Peralta’s suspension.” And after whole heatedly denying taking pe...

Tigers rumors: Jhonny Peralta done in Detroit?

Jhonny Peralta's 50-game suspension was hardly a surprise, as it was more of a case of when than if it would happen. As such, the Detroit Tigers had time to prepare, and they took advantage of that opportunity by acquiring young shortstop Jose Iglesias from the Boston Red Sox in a recent three-team trade. While at one point it appeared to be a near sure bet that Peralta would...

However, that doesn't answer what's in store for...

Game 2013.109: White Sox at Tigers

63-45, 1st place, 3 games up on Cle. Jhonny Peralta has nerves of steel. Over his last ten games he’s hitting .351 with 3 HR and 8 RBIs. I don’t know how he’s not vomiting every time up the plate with what he’s facing on Monday. This reminds me of that time my boss called me into his office during a summer internship. Had he seen the email? Or had he not?. Rumors were that...

For a while, Biogenesis didn’t exist. Then for a while, Biogenesis did exist, but we didn’t know anything about it. Then we started to know a lot about it, and in particular a lot about its distribution of performance-enhancing drugs, but it didn’t seem like baseball would be able to hand out much in the way of discipline.
