Found April 24, 2012 on WHYGAVS?:
A week or so ago, Baseball America's JJ Cooper published subscriber-only a piece that discusses Pedro Alvarez. An American League scout opined that if he didn't know Alvarez's pedigree, he'd be tempted to call him a non-prospect. Jim Callis follows up on that today by discussing some of the biggest position player draft busts and concluding:  Perhaps if Alvarez can get himself into better shape, he can reclaim the bat speed and hitting ability that made him the No. 2 choice just four years ago. If not, you could argue that he's the biggest waste of hitting talent in draft history. Callis qualifies his words carfeully (IF he can get himself into shape ...) but it's pretty alarming to see Alvarez discussed alongside the biggest draft busts in history in the present tense. Of course, it's also alarming to see him not be able to catch up to a Kyle Lohse fastball, and I suppose those two things go hand in hand.

Gorkys Hernandez Video Recap – 4/22/12

Gorkys Hernandez was at one point rated as the #62 prospect in all of baseball when he was in the Atlanta Braves organization. However, his stock has fallen quite a bit since being acquired by the Pirates in the Nate McLouth trade in 2009. Pirates Prospects ranks him now as the #24 prospect in the Pirates organization. He still possesses and excellent glove and arm and should make...

Bedard is the Biggest Loser

Poor Erik Bedard. The man has posted a very respectable 2.63 ERA, but leads the Majors in losses with 4. 4 starts, 4 losses. This is what happens when you pitch for the Majors' worst offense. The Pittsburgh Pirates should be ashamed.  He's currently on pace for 43 losses. Congratulations Erik Bedard, you are the biggest loser.

The Pirates' offense is so bad ... (How bad is it?)

For some context, here's how much worse the Pirates are than everyone in the National League right now when it comes to hitting: Tm R/G G PA AB R ▾ H 2B 3B HR BB SO BA OBP SLG OPS OPS+ TB ATL 5.69 16 613 546 91 144 29 4 18 51 115 .264 .324 .430 .754 111 235 STL 5.12 16 625 559 82 157 28 6 20 51 126 .281 .346 .460 .806...

Game 16: Pirates 5 Rockies 4

Let's start with this: this post will not be about bunting. I have an alarming amount of things to say about bunting and I'll probably say them several times in the near future. The bunting in this game made me angry, but I want to save most of these thoughts for later so that I can be more coherent and (hopefully) eloquent about it. For tonight, the Pirates had one of their...

Game 15: Cardinals 5 Pirates 1

I wanted to keep my streak of a recap-for-every-game going since I kind of fell off of the table towards the end of the year last fall and I don't want to head down the rabbit hole again. The problem is that I have nothing unique to say about this game at the moment; Erik Bedard hit some rough spots early but cruised after the fourth inning and pitched generally well. The Pirates...

Doubleheader!

After the Pirates exciting win last night, they close out this series with the Rockies and this homestand with a double-header this afternoon. It's an old school doubleheader; it's starting at 12:35 and the second game will start a half hour or so after the first. One ticket, two games. Kind of makes me wish that back in Pittsburgh with a physics class to skip or something...
