OAKLAND, Calif. — The Oakland Athletics have designated right-hander Jim Johnson for assignment before Thursday’s game against the Houston Astros. Johnson, acquired in a trade with the Baltimore Orioles, was 4-2 with a 6.92 ERA in 38 games with the A’s. Brought in to replace Grant Balfour as the team’s closer, Johnson faltered early, blowing his first two chances before losing his job. He allowed four runs on three hits without retiring a batter in Wednesday night’s 9-7 victory over the Astros. Johnson led the AL in saves in each of the past two seasons, with 50 last year and 51 in 2012. Evan Scribner was recalled to replace Johnson on the 25-man roster. Mark McGwire wants nothing to do with Jose Canseco

Former Oakland Athletics slugger Jose Canseco attempted to make good with his old team this past weekend. Canseco was on hand for the 25th anniversary of the A’s 1989 World Series team at O.co in Oakland on Saturday.  Mark McGwire, who couldn’t make it to the event because he is currently a coach with the Los Angeles Dodgers, isn’t having any of it. The one-time single-season...

Mark McGwire Done With Jose Canseco, Drives Canseco To Twitter Meltdown

There once was a time when Mark McGwire and Jose Canseco were close friends. In fact, they were like brothers — or “Bash Brothers” as they were called in their days with the Oakland Athletics. Canseco then infamously accused McGwire of being a steroid user in Canseco’s 2005 book, allegations that helped bring  McGwire’s baseball world crashing down. McGwire eventually...

Jim Johnson: Addition-By-Subtraction The Best Option for the A’s

Although you could argue that perhaps the time has already passed, there is no arguing now that Jim Johnson’s time in Oakland needs to have come to an end with his last outing last night against the Houston Astros. Johnson, traded for to be the closer to replace the popular Grant Balfour, came to Oakland with a very impressive 101 saves over the 2012 and 2013 seasons. He has recorded...

Mark McGwire-Jose Canseco Beef is Very Much Alive, Heated and Not Ending Anytime Soon

Mark McGwire and Jose Canseco will not be vacationing in Cabo together anytime soon, or probably ever. The much-publicized non-relationship between the two former Oakland Athletics teammates is not repairing itself despite repeated attempts at reconciliation by Canseco. Unless you’re living under a rock, McGwire is still fussy after Canseco released his tell-all book in 2005,...

Athletics News: Oakland DFA's Jim Johnson

The Oakland Athletics finally designated reliever Jim Johnson for assignment on Thursday. The former Orioles closer has struggled mightily this season in the A's bullpen, putting up a 6.92 ERA in 40.1 innings pitched. In his most recent game against the Houston Astros, Johnson entered in the eighth inning and failed to record even one out. He gave up three runs on four hits...

Dallas Keuchel zings heckler with ball that reads ‘Thanks for paying my salary’ (pic)

Houston Astros pitcher Dallas Keuchel had the last laugh in response to a heckler’s taunts during an off-day as his teammates faced the Oakland Athletics at O.co Coliseum on Thursday night. Apparently tired of the heckler but nevertheless engaging him — we’re assuming it was a man, although it could have been a woman (doubtful) […] The post Dallas Keuchel zings heckler with...

Athletics Injury Update: Josh Reddick activated

The Oakland A's entered Tuesday night's game against the Houston Astros with a record of 61-37, first in the American League East. The A's have been a powerhouse both offensively and on the mound all season, ranked second in runs scored and third in ERA. The offense should get even better, with the return of veteran outfielder Josh Reddick, who has been out with an...

A’s Top Prospects Soaring At Stockton

Banner Island Ballpark in Stockton This year, the biggest crop of top prospects for the A’s has been playing for the Stockton Ports in the Class-A California League. And three of the team’s top four picks from the 2013 draft...

A Domonic Brown For Josh Reddick Trade Would Give A Fresh Start To Both

He was supposed to be the next big slugger and a really important part of his team's offense. After an offensive explosion of home runs and putting together a season that would put him on the map, he struggled. What seemed like a prolific power hitter and anchor in the...

Biz Markie Throws Awful First Pitch At Athletics-Astros Game (Video)

Biz Markie visited O.co Coliseum for Wednesday’s game between the Houston Astros and Oakland Athletics, throwing out a first pitch that fans likely won’t forget. Marcel Theo Hall, better known by his stage name ‘Biz Markie,’ didn’t skip the ball to home plate, but the southpaw might have thrown the slowest first pitch do date. Jeff Samardzija has ‘no hard feelings’ for Cubs

Sitting in a clubhouse that has hosted more raw sewage than playoff celebrations during his career, Jeff Samardzija can finally breathe. “It’s fun, man. It’s great,” the former Cubs pitcher says of the new surroundings in Oakland. “It’s exciting.” If that says something about the pennant race he suddenly joined and the motley-looking group of young A’s teammates...

Samardzija Cruises & Moss Slams the Astros, A’s Beat Houston 13-1

Jeff Samardzija made up for the spent bullpen Wednesday night with eight solid innings in a 13-1 win over the Astros Thursday afternoon. The only blemish on the A’s new ace right-hander’s afternoon was a solo homer to former Athletics slugger Chris Carter in the top of the fourth, Carter’s 20th homer of the season. Samardzija finished with a pitching line of one earned run...

Cespedes Belts Two Homers, Helps A’s Outlast Astros 9-7

Following their 12-inning loss to the Astros Monday night, the A’s looked to give the weeknight crowd of a little over 28,300 fans something more to cheer about than just the root beer floats that were served pre-game in the East Side Club. Jesse Chavez, pitching on 10 days rest, looked sharp through his 5.2 innings. He matched zeroes on the scoreboard with former A’s prospect...
