One of the pluses when I turned 50 years old was it was the first time in my life I didn’t give a flyin’ **** what anyone thought about me. It’s a great feeling to have the burden of acceptance lifted from one’s shoulders.  You reach that point in life where you make a decision that you feel is right and if anyone else doesn’t like it well, too bad.  That’s why I had to smile at Jim Leyland letting the media know why he told them ahead of time that he would not use Joquin Benoit or Jose Valverde in yesterday’s win or go home Game 5: “Well, it’s what we said before the game. So it gave everybody a chance to get all their second-guessing ready about it,” Leyland said. “That’s just the way it had to be today. We talked about it before the game and we did exactly what we felt we had to do to give ourselves any chance to win the series.” In other words, Leyland let all the wash women (a/k/a the main stream media)write up their “kill Leyland” stories ahead of time. Leyland enjoying postseason ride

DETROIT -- It's becoming almost a daily ritual in these American League playoffs: Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland acknowledges his team is in a tough spot, talks about what a terrific postseason this is -- and without a hint of resignation in his voice, commends his players for their resolve. In his 20th season as a major league manager, Leyland has won two pennants and a World Series.

Game Picks - Sunday: October 16, 2011

Saturday's game between the Tigers and Rangers was really kind of a sad ending for what has been a great Tigers' season. Jim Leyland could not work his rotation in his favor after a tough series with the Yankees and his bullpen proved his undoing. The route was simply a shame for him and his team. On the other hand, it was a party for the Rangers from the third inning on...

This is why you don’t name captains

It’s not so much weird that Kyle Orton is not the Broncos’ starting quarterback as it’s awkward to see him in the front line leading the team stretch as a team captain and backup quarterback. It caused me to reflect on a conversation I had in 1999 with then-Rockies manager Jim Leyland about leadership. “”You got to be careful about that leader stuff,” Leyland said then...

Drew Sharp: Forecast for Justin Verlander: Fixed, focused

The t-word doesn't apply in the postseason. Tired? Rest is reserved for the winter. Jim Leyland said there was no day off for the back end of his bullpen Wednesday. His explanation was concise.
