Veteran hitter Jim Thome has been dealt to the Baltimore Orioles. The 41-year old slugger will assume a full time role as Baltimore’s designated hitter. Thome is hitting just .242 on the season with five home runs and 15 RBIs but he only appeared in 30 games for the Philadelphia Phillies this season after experiencing a back injury.

The move to Baltimore should increase Thome’s production as he won’t be playing in the field. Baltimore’s DH position has accounted for a .258/.349/.439 line this season, but the Orioles have used a trio of players at the position, Nick Johnson, Mark Reynolds and Chris Davis have all rotated at the DH spot for Baltimore. Johnson is currently on the Orioles disabled list.

According to the Associated Press, Thome enjoys hitting in the confines of Camden Yards. He has played 67 games at the stadium and has averaged a home run every 13.6 at bats in Baltimore.

Thome is plying under a one-year deal worth $1.25 million and Baltimore will absorb the balance of his deal for the rest of the season.

In exchange for Thome, the Phillies received two prospects, P Kyle Simon and C Gabriel Lino, both players are currently in A ball in the Philadelphia farm system. Simon was Baltimore’s fourth-round selection in the 2011 MLB Draft. He currently has pitched 72 2/3 inning with an ERA of 3.96 averaging 6 strikeouts and 2.6 walks per nine innings.

Lino currently has a line of .218/.282/.340 in 227 at bats this season.

The trade to Baltimore will be the sixth team Thome has played for in his 22 year career with stops in Minnesota, Cleveland, Chicago with the White Sox and Los Angeles with the Dodgers along with Philadelphia.

All-Star Chris Perez pitched a scoreless 9th (not a save situation!) for the Indians, who improved...
