Jim Thome is still looking for work, but he could be in luck. According to Darren Wolfson of 1500 ESPN, there is mutual interest between Thome and Twins manager Ron Gardenhire, leaving some to believe the 42-year-old slugger could end up continuing his career in Minnesota in 2013. Wolfson reports that not everyone in the Minnesota organization is on board with the idea, as the major sticking point reportedly is Thome’s insistence on signing a major league deal. Nevertheless, it’s interesting to see that Thome wants to keep playing, even if it’s still in a minimal bench role. Thome’s desire to continue what has been an excellent career got us thinking. What other players out there who will be 40 or who are turning 40 this season are capable of making an impact? Jason Giambi expressed a desire to manage during the offseason, but after the Rockies hired Walt Weiss as their new skipper, the veteran instead decided that he wasn’t ready to hang up the cleats and signed a minor league deal with the Indians. Then, of course, there are a couple of hurlers in the Bronx who could make their presence felt.
