Prior to their last road game of the season Wednesday, a 6-4 win over the Chicago White Sox, the Cleveland Indians announced that Ubaldo Jimenez's season is over. The right-hander was scratched from his last two starts of the season due to a sprained right ankle. In a season of major disappointment for the team overall, Jimenez was probably the biggest underachiever individually. Jimenez (9-17) is the major league leader in losses, and his 5.55 ERA ranks 89th among the 91 pitchers who qualify for the ERA title. He also leads the American League in wild pitches (16), and he's second in walks (95). This is not what the Indians had in mind at the beginning of the season when Jimenez was the No. 2 starter in the rotation. The 28-year-old instead produced the kind of numbers teams typically get from a back-of-the-rotation starter. In nine of his 31 starts, he pitched five innings or less. Most disconcerting of all for team officials is that Jimenez got worse as the season wore on. At the All-Star break, Jimenez was 8-7 with a 4.50 ERA. However, in 14 starts after the break, he went 1-10 with a 6.99 ERA. Overall, the Indians haven't gotten nearly what they were hoping to get from Jimenez since acquiring him in a deal with the Colorado Rockies at the trade deadline last year. In 42 starts for Cleveland, Jimenez is 13-21 with a 5.43 ERA while averaging 4.5 walks and 9.6 hits per nine innings. The Indians traded for him with the idea that he would be a No. 1-caliber starter in their rotation, but he hasn't come close to those lofty expectations.
