Officially now, Joaquin Benoit is no longer a Detroit Tiger. The setup man-turned-closer-turned-David Ortiz grand slam victim is headed west … and to the National League.

Those numbers work out to $7.25 million per year — far less than what Detroit gave new closer Joe Nathan (two seasons at $10 million per). However, the option of bringing Benoit back as a setup man in Detroit fell off the table quickly, from both sides.
The Tigers instead will move forward, at least for now, with some combination of Bruce Rondon, Al Alburquerue, Ian Krol, Phil Coke and newly-signed Joba Chamberlain leading into Nathan’s ninth-inning work.
