There were a lot of jokes on the internet today when news came out that New York Yankees pitcher Joba Chamberlain had broken his ankle while playing and jumping on a trampoline with his son at a recreational center. It is common to have responses as such, because here is a professional athlete who injures himself in what appears to be such a mundane way, like how fellow teammate David Robertson hurt his foot moving boxes down the stairs. But Joba’s injury was much more serious that originally thought.

The hard-throwing righty actually suffered a massive loss of blood when the injury happened. There was actually a threat to his life, and not just time off the mound. Chamberlains actual injury was a open dislocation. He had surgery last night following the accident, and will remain in the hospital for several days.

“Keep him in our prayers, because obviously he’s facing a lot right now,” said Cashman, who appeared shaken while delivering the news.

There is no time table for Joba’s return to the Yankees, in fact, the word’s career-threatening are not unreasonable at this point, depending on how his ankle heals. It isn’t out of the question to at least rule this season out. That would be unfortunate for the Yankees and Joba, who had been battling back from season-ending Tommy John surgery from a year ago. But regardless, Joba just getting healthy enough to leave the hospital is his and the franchises first concern.
