The Chuck Knoblog:
I guess for the last month of the meaningless season its necessary and alright. However, Cash and Girardi seemed to leave the door open to him relieving next year. This is just stupid. I have no idea how they plan to pull this off. Going into the the offseason with only Wang as a sure thing to be in the rotation next year is a dangerous idea. The bullpen has been the lone bright spot this year. The Yankees just tried out a bunch of different guys with good stuff for the bullpen. Some of them worked out brilliantly (Veras, Ramirez, and Bruney) and some of them failed. Next year Mark Melancon, Chris Britton, Jonathan Albaladejo, Humberto Sanchez and plenty of other guys with good arms could get a shot next year in addition to what they already have. The bullpen is not a concern going into next year. They need a centerfielder, first baseman and starting pitching.
If Hughes pitches great for the rest of the year, Mussina comes back, and they sign two of Burnett/Sheets/Sabathia then I guess I'm okay with the move. However, I'd be extremely disappointing if I never saw Joba start a game ever again.
