Second baseman Brandon Phillips will be back with the Cincinnati Reds next season, general manager Walt Jocketty told the Cincinnati Enquirer.
Jocketty's stance means the Reds will either pick up Phillips' $12 million for 2012 or sign him to a contract extension, which is what the second baseman would prefer. The report said the sides have had preliminary talks about a new contract.
Phillips, 30, is batting .294 with 18 homers and 81 RBI this season. He was acquired from Cleveland prior to the 2006 season and has been a mainstay at second base since.
