The Chicago Cubs fired manager Dale Sveum on Monday and the front office has just begun its search for his replacement, but there is already a name at the top of the list. The Cubs reportedly have “serious interest” in current New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi. Girardi’s contract with the Yankees is up on October 31 and the team is moving quickly to lock him up and ensure he stays put. But the Cubs would like to change that if they can. While Chicago won’t be given permission to talk to the 48-year-old skipper before his contract expires, they have made it known he is their top choice to replace Sveum. Girardi is a native of Peoria, Illinois, he went to college at Northwestern and was drafted by and broke into the big leagues with the Cubs in 1989. He played for the team from 1989 to 1992, then had a second stint with the Cubs from 2000 to 2002, and had his only All-Star appearance when he was with the team during the 2000 season. On the flip side, Girardi won three World Series titles with the Yankees as a player (1996, 1998 and 1999) and led them to a championship as a manager in 2009. He’s pretty well solidified himself as a Yankee through and through, so unless talks breakdown with New York it’d be hard to see him leaving. Girardi just finished his sixth season as the manager of the Yankees and in that time he has compiled a record of 564-408, which is good for a winning percentage of .580. He has led the team to three American League East titles and the one aforementioned World Series championship. It isn’t surprising that the Cubs would be interested in going after Girardi as he has been highly successful with a major market team. That said, the Yankees are going to do everything in their power to retain their current skipper and I’d be shocked if they didn’t make him the highest paid manager in the game.   The post Joe Girardi: Chicago Cubs have “serious interest” in Yankees manager appeared first on Midwest Sports Fans.
