Joe Mauer the Twins' franchise player was placed on baseball's seven-day concussion list Tuesday night. He had been scratched from the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Tigers after experiencing dizziness during batting practice. Mauer originally was set to play first base one day after taking a series of foul balls off his catcher's mask during a makeup game against the New York Mets. "He took about five foul balls off the head (Monday)" Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said before Tuesday's game and before Mauer was placed on the DL. "I think he has a sore forehead. He's fine. That has nothing to do with it." Asked Tuesday whether the foul tips Monday were anything beyond the norm Mauer shook his head. "Not really" he told the Pioneer Press. "It's that time of year too. It's August 20th. Being a catcher you get beat up all year long. I got beat up a little bit behind the plate (Monday) but nothing where I needed to get out from behind there. ... I'm A-OK." Mauer said he had been administered concussion tests at various times during his major league baseball career but only as a "precaution." The Twins called up outfielder Chris Colabello to replace Mauer on the roster. In a rare move Gardenhire announced before the start of this three-game series that Mauer wouldn't be behind the plate for any of the matchups with the division-leading Detroit Tigers. Rookie Chris Herrmann is scheduled to catch rookie left-hander Andrew Albers for the fourth time in as many starts Thursday. Veteran Ryan Doumit activated off the seven-day concussion disabled list Friday caught Tuesday and was penciled in to catch Wednesday as well. Before Tuesday's game there was no immediate mention from the Twins about concern regarding a possible concussion for Mauer but the mention of dizziness certainly raised a red flag. Doumit admitted to dizziness and nausea after leaving a game Aug. 7 at Kansas City with what was later diagnosed as a concussion. Tigers catcher Alex Avila was placed on the seven-day concussion disabled list Tuesday after initially believing he had not suffered one last week. "I think Avila's on the DL -- you never want to see that" Mauer said. "As a catcher there's a lot of danger back there. You get beat up. You try to avoid it as much as you can but sometimes you just can't."
