#Pirates closer Joel Hanrahan (tight hammy) likely not back in action until Friday.

I guess it could be worse.
The Pirates’ bullpen will already be depleted due to having to pitch eight innings on Tuesday night and will now be without their best pitcher in the series finale against Arizona.
Hanrahan “tweaked” his hamstring on the final pitch during his first save on Sunday in San Francisco. Juan Cruz served as the closer in Tuesday’s 5-4 win over the Diamondbacks and will probably serve the same role, if needed, on Wednesday.
James McDonald gets both the start and the task of having to go pretty deep into Wednesday’s ball game. That has not necessarily been a strength of his throughout his career.

Gerrit Cole and Oscar Taveras: Scouting the Unknown
Gerrit Cole | RHP, Pirates | Born: 9/8/1990
As the first overall selection in the 2011 draft, signed out of UCLA to the Pittsburgh Pirates for a bonus worth $8 million, Gerrit Cole has arrived in pro baseball with large expectations. The hype isn’t without merit, though. Cole’s heater tops out at 102 mph and he counters with a deadly slider and a plus change. His arsenal...
BP Unfiltered: Watching Pedro Alvarez by R.J. Anderson
Later tonight, the Pirates will take on the Diamondbacks. Pittsburgh is unlikely to start Pedro Alvarez because Joe Saunders is scheduled to take the mound for Arizona. Alvarez as a platoon player isn’t what the Pirates envisioned for him back on Draft Day 2008, but the reality is more grim. There are slow starts, and then there are 1-for-19 with 12 strikeout starts. Why is Alvarez...
Monday 4/16 Minor League Roundup
AAA Indianapolis | Game 1 - Toledo 9 Indianapolis 2AJ Burnett made the rehab start in Indy on Monday and got knocked up. He threw 81 pitches through four innings on the mound, and allowed five runs on seven hits. Burnett walked four but was unable to strikeout any batters. Shairon Martis also had a pretty bad day giving up four earned runs in three innings of relief. Both pitchers...
Pittsburgh Pirate Parrot Costume Update
The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-4 in front of yours truly and 19,197 other people on Tuesday night at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona.
The win improved the Pirates to 4-7 and moved their magic number to 77 games in pursuit of achieving my lofty preseason expectations of the Bucs- a non losing season after 19 consecutive...
Bucs head home with back-D-Backs wins
The Pirates found some more two-out magic last night, rallying late in the game to beat the Diamondbacks 2-1 to win a series for the first time since they opened the year against the Phillies. This was a big game for the Buccos to try to erase what had been a god awful road trip and gain some momentum coming back home.
The Diamondbacks took a 1-0 lead in the first inning after...
Tuesday 4/17 Minor League Roundup
AAA Indianapolis | Columbus 5 Indianapolis 1The Indians were only able to plate one run on Tuesday despite seven hits. Brandon Boggs and Kris Watts both went two for four. The only RBI of the night came from outfielder Gorkys Hernandez and Starling Marte didn't get any hits while striking out three times. Justin Wilson took the mound for the team and worked through six innings...
The Pittsburgh Pirate Pacific Time Zone Challenge!
Tonight the Pittsburgh Pirates and their miserable offense will go head-to-head with potential Cy Young candidate Ian Kennedy in Arizona. The game will start a 9:40 PM in the Eastern Time Zone. Can you stay awake for the whole game? Why would you want to? Well, I'll probably be awake for the whole game, because that's how I roll. So take the challenge with me and with other...
Jeff Karstens headed to 15-day DL
We kind of had a feeling that after Jeff Karstens had to leave last night’s game after the first inning with an inflamed shoulder that things might get worse. Well, things just got worse – Karstens has been placed on the disabled list. He’s the third Pirates starter to hit the DL within the first two weeks of the season (AJ Burnett and Charlie Morton started the year there...
Recap 4/18 | Pirates 2 Diamondbacks 1
The Pirates won their rubber match with the Diamondbacks today, 2-1. It was a solid team effort with some great bullpen pitching. The Pirates ran through a lot of their bullpen yesterday and needed a deep start by James McDonald, but they didn't get anything close to it. JMac threw over thirty pitches in the first inning and finished the game with over seventy pitches, only going...
Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Arizona Diamondbacks – Game 12
Well I guess the question of what spot A.J. Burnett will take has probably been answered with Jeff Karstens being pulled due to shoulder inflammation. Some of these guys finally looked like Major League hitters, and if not for Jason Grilli giving up the lead would have beaten a very, very good pitcher in Ian [...]
Surprise, Bucs score one run…again, lose…again
Who would have guessed that the lowest scoring team in baseball would only score one run in a 5-1 loss to the Diamondbacks last night? Well, seeing as how the Pirates have scored more than just one run five times this year, it was a pretty safe bet.
For the third straight game, the Buccos scored first but they’re 1-2 in those games and now 1-6 on the road, and overall they’re...
Another step back
It looked like the Pirates were ready to build some momentum coming off an encouraging victory on Sunday, but they weren’t able to sustain their early surge and fell right back in to their giant offensive slump.
The Bucs jumped out to a quick lead in the first, but were only able to score once on three hits and a walk. Joe Saunders was not sharp early on, but Neil Walker‘s RBI...

Must read links of the day
I've got a busy Tuesday, as usual, and won't be free much before the end of the work day, but there are two links I wanted to pass along as some of the better things I've read in quite some time. The first is this MLB.com story about Dave Cameron's battle with leukemia over the last year. I don't know Dave personally, but as a statistically-slanted baseball blogger...
