The Red Sox have called up five additional players now that the major-league rosters have expanded to 40 spots.

Outfielder Joey Gathright, shortstop Jose Iglesias, first baseman Lars Anderson, right-handed reliever Junichi Tazawa and left-handed reliever Trever Miller. To make room, J.D. Drew was placed on the 60-day disabled list and Nate Spears was designated for assignment.

Red Sox manager Terry Francona told members of the media that these additions won’t be seeing too much playing time in games.

“These guys aren’t here to start for us because we have starters,” Red Sox manager Terry Francona said.

Nonetheless, Gathright is excited to be back in the bigs. He stole a combined 42 bases in 2005 and 2006.

“My goal was to get back here and I didn’t know if it was going to happen,” Gathright said. “You need to stay dedicated to know what you need to do to get back to where you belong and that’s what I did.”
