The New York Mets got shelled by the Marlins tonight by a score of 13-0 and have now lost nine straight games at home for the first time since 2004.  The only good news Mets fans got today is that Johan Santana is close to making his return from the DL after a successful rehab start for the Brooklyn Cyclones on Sunday in which he tossed three scoreless innings.  Santana, who hasn’t pitched in a big league game since July 20th, is set to take the mound this Saturday against the Braves and according to MLB.com, the left-hander won’t be limited in his return.

Johan Santana threw his scheduled bullpen session on Wednesday afternoon at Citi Field, and manager Terry Collins said the southpaw will pitch without any limitations on Saturday against the Braves.

“I’m very, very confident that Saturday night we’re going to see a good outing out of Johan, because he’s feeling so much better about the way his arm feels, the way his leg feels and the energy he’s gotten back,” Collins said. “But we can be very cautious with him during the month of September to make sure he goes into the offseason feeling good.”

Collins said to not be surprised if he opts to give Santana extra rest on a regular basis in September to ensure he finishes the year strong.

“I don’t want to go into next Spring Training trying to find if Johan Santana is going to be healthy again,” Collins said. “I want to know he is.”

With the Mets floundering of late at home a healthy Johan will at least give fans reason for hope at Citi Field.  Hopefully the 33-year-old has some more magic left for the last couple of months of the season because I DEFINITELY liked watching this team a lot more when he and R.A. Dickey were pitching like aces and giving the Mets a shot at winning every series.
