Allen Webster has been one of the best surprises of Spring Training, and as John Tomase points out, the Red Sox will have a decision to make about how long they'll be able to keep him in Pawtucket. He's looking big-league ready for an organization that isn't exactly burgeoning with top-flight talent. After another impressive performance scattering three hits over three innings without giving up an earned run, Webster found his ERA for the spring at 1.64 and receiving some pretty strong praise from his manager: "He's pretty damn good." Thanks for the analysis, John. When Webster was included in the miraculous Carl Crawford exorcism (every day it looks better and better, doesn't it?), he was lower profile than Rubby de la Rosa. This spring continued that tradition when Pedro started tutoring de la Rosa on his already strong changeup, and writers and fans alike (including me) got all kinds of psyched dreaming about Rubby becoming the new Pedro. SoxProspects continues to list de la Rosa ahead of Webster on the team's prospect list, rating them four and five respectively. But Webster's big spring has risen his profile and led us to consider that he, too, could be a fixture in the Sox rotation in the coming years if he can keep it up. And it might be sooner than later.
