John Lannan defeated the Washington Nationals on Monday night. With eight innings of work the 28-year-old led the Phillies to a 3-2 victory.
Lannan went from 2011 Opening Day starter to minor leaguer to free agent this winter.
While Lannan has pitched well against the Nationals in two starts this season he holds a 4.23 ERA and a 1.39 WHIP on the season overall.

Visions of pitcher John Lannan must have haunted the National’s dream last night after he held them scoreless for 8 innings in a Phillies 3-2 win. It was Lannan’s best outing of the year and the first time since 2009 that he made it through 8 innings. Lannan completely dominated his former team, which had to be the cherry on the sundae for him.
Lannan had some help last night...
We’ve all fallen in love with the Phillies farm system while witnessing several players tear it up this season. Maikel Franco, Cody Asche, and Jesse Biddle are the new faces of the minors, and rightfully so. Each has given you something to look forward to for the future.
ESPN’s Keith Law says wait a tick. Law scouted the Reading Fightin’ Phils last week and came away with some...
Lost in Bryce Harper's return from DL and Davey's failed attempt to rest him for the weekend (Hmmm...maybe it was an attempt to motivate?) and subsequent "play me or trade me" fake controversy and Harper's selection to the NL All-Star team is the fact that Harper is growing a serious beard. Jayson Werth must be proud.

Danny Knobler of CBS Sports points out that the Texas
Rangers have the money and prospects to make a big splash this summer since the
team avoided acquiring players such as Zack Greinke, Josh Hamilton, Justin Upton and James Shields this offseason. Knobler says the Rangers would “love”
to trade for Philadelphia Phillies left-hander Cliff Lee, but it doesn’t appear
Ryan Howard was placed on the 15-day disabled list with inflammation in his left knee on Saturday, but the bad news gets worse for the Philadelphia Phillies.
On Monday, an MRI confirmed a torn meniscus in his left knee that will require surgery. The injury is expected to sideline the first baseman for 6-8 weeks, according to ESPN. No date for surgery has been set at this time.
Just when you put the baseball season behind you. Just when you started the countdown to the opening of training camp. Just when you thought your heart couldn’t take any more. The Phils put together a solid month of Major League baseball to creep back towards the .500 mark and possible playoff contention prior to the All-Star break.
Let’s be clear. The Phillies have dug...
Phillippe Aumont just can't seem to throw strikes. Therefore, the Phillies just can't keep him on the major league roster. Today the Phillies sent Aumont down to AAA Lehigh Valley once again. Aumont was recalled after Mike Stutes went onto the disabled list, but he has failed to take advantage...
It was obvious that Philadelphia Phillies slugger Ryan Howard was hurt before he went on the DL, but the minimum 15 days is not going to clear up this injury. On Monday afternoon, the Philadelphia Inquirer's Matt Gelb tweeted that Howard had been diagnosed with a meniscus tear and is set to have surgery that will sideline him for at least six weeks.
Ryan Howard has a...
The Phillies paid outfielder Danny Tartabull $2.3 million in 1997 for seven hitless at bats. But Tartabull did not use that to support his kids and now he is on the run from the law. The U.K.'s Mail Online posted this wanted poster of the former Phillies slugger: According to...
As someone who has covered the Washington Nationals from the moment they moved to D.C. in 2005 I can tell you watching and talking to Bryce Harper is a treat. He is a bright respectful young man who loves the bright lights of being in the Major Leagues. One of the best things about covering Harper is watching him take batting practice. Fans, teammates and players from the opposing...

It was a tough afternoon for Kris Medlen on the mound as the Atlanta Braves fell 7-3, to the Philadelphia Phillies. The Phillies took 2 of 3 in the weekend series and gave the Braves their 4th loss in their last 6 games. The Phillies jumped on Kris Medlen and the Braves early on Sunday afternoon. A Dominique Brown triple in the first inning brought around Chase Utley to score...
Peter Gammons, as he so often does, teased an interesting tidbit yesterday morning, this one concerning Philliers closer Jonathan Papelbon. To wit:
The Tigers and Red Sox might be more aggressive on Papelbon were he not 5-for-9 in one run save opportunities, as well as the velo drop
— Peter Gammons (@pgammo) July 8, 2013
Gammons has a point, particularly about the drop in velocity...
Thanks to Matt Monroe for the screencap! Lannan pitched an excellent game tonight. He went 8 innings with 4 hits, no runs, 2 walks and 4 strikeouts. Papelbon came in the 9th and gave up 2 hits back to back. He ended up with 2 hits, 2 runs, and 2...
