Found September 29, 2013 on Redlegs Review:
It appears the fate of Cincinnati's 2013 season will fall upon the arm of Johnny Cueto on Tuesday. Following Saturday's loss to the Pirates, manager Dusty Baker announced that Cueto, and not Mat Latos, will get the ball for the Wild Card game at PNC Park. Baker cited the fact that Latos is currently battling arm soreness as part of the reason for the change.  Cueto was previously slated to start Sunday's game. However, the game became inconsequential when the Pirates clinched homefield advantage for the one-game Wild Card round with Saturday's win. Despite having made just two starts since returning from a three-month stint on the disabled list, teammates remain confident in Cueto's ability to get the job done. "There's no question about it -- injury or not -- Johnny is still our ace," first baseman Joey Votto said. "I know that Mat Latos, he's definitely put a lot of pressure on the pitching staff, challenging them ...

MLB Game Picks - Tuesday: October 1, 2013

If you are a fan of the Texas Rangers, how do you view the past few years? Is it a good thing that the team has been very good and has continued to make the post season? Or is it ultimately a bad thing with two losses in the World Series--one a brutal loss--two play-in losses and September fades? Judging from the reaction of my Twitter buds who are Rangers fans, it was another brutal...

An unbiased look at Dusty Baker's postseason managerial record

For 20 of the past 21 seasons, Dusty Baker has been the manager of a Major League Baseball team. His managerial career began with a bang when he led the San Francisco Giants to a whopping 103 wins in 1993. He was named National League Manager of the Year for his efforts, but the Giants ultimately missed out on the playoffs, finishing just one game behind the Atlanta Braves for...

NL Wild Card Game Preview: Reds vs. Pirates

October baseball has arrived. First treat of the post season comes in the form of the Reds vs Pirates at PNC Park in Pittsburgh. The one-game winner advances, Wild Card game is in it’s sophomore year, and so far so good. The round is cutthroat, succinct and the Pirates 11-8 regular season edge means nothing. Whichever team comes more prepared to play advances to the NLDS. The...

Playoff Prospectus: NL Wild Card Game Preview by Ben Lindbergh

The Pirates throw a left-handed sinkerballer against a lineup ill-suited for left-handers and sinkerballers; the Reds will try to ride their OBP stars to give Johnny Cueto a shot at postseason redemption.

Reds P Latos out for wild card game

Right-hander Mat Latos has a bone chip in his elbow and will be unavailable for the Cincinnati Reds' wild card playoff game Tuesday in Pittsburgh. The Reds are hopeful that with a couple of days of treatment, Latos' elbow could improve enough that he'll be available if Cincinnati wins the one-game playoff and advances to the division series. Manager Dusty Baker had...

Mat Latos has bone spur in right elbow

Cincinnati Reds' pitcher Mat Latos found out on Monday that the soreness he's been experiencing in his right elbow is because of a bone spur. As reported by Mark Sheldon of MLB.com, an X-ray taken on Latos' elbow revealed the injury. He was originally slated to start Tuesday's National League Wild Card Game vs. the Pirates, but will now miss the start in favor...

Do or Die

After 162 games it all comes down to one more showdown between Cincinnati and Pittsburgh to determine who will advance into the division playoffs as the wild card winner. The Pirates have had their way recently, sweeping a three game series at Great American Ball Park. Cincinnati is hopeful that oft-injured Johnny Cueto will be ready for a strong performance to keep their season alive.

Two to go

The main implication of today's game is this: if the Pirates win, tomorrow's game is meaningless and both teams can start positioning themselves for Tuesday's wild card game. For the Pirates, that probably means starting someone other than Gerrit Cole so that Cole will be available out of the bullpen on Tuesday. For the Reds, I'm not sure if it means that they'...

Previewing the NL Wild Card Matchup

The NL wildcard matchup this year features two teams who know a lot about each other.  The storyline for this game couldn’t be any more drama filled.  There have been multiple times over the last two years that the Reds and Pirates have almost got into a brawl over HBP’s.  One example of just how much hate fills the heart of these two teams, the Pirates had a player go on...

What do you write when you can’t find the words?

Nearly a year later, we find ourselves back at the original scene of the crime. We’re still trying to solve the case. The Reds are still trying to win a postseason series under Dusty Baker. It’s been nearly 20 years and the people like me who grew up at Riverfront Stadium are still waiting for the Reds to truly return to glory. I don’t know what you can say in a post like this...

Reds may be one-and-done in playoffs

On Sept. 8, after winning three of four from the Cardinals and sweeping the Dodgers, the Reds looked like they might be poised for a World Series run. As they enter Tuesday night's wild-card game in Pittsburgh, losers of five straight games, they look ready for a quick elimination. What happened? And if these Reds can't get past the Pirates and Cardinals, what happens in...
