A franchise rich in history and tradition, the Boston Red Sox feature a multitude of legendary players who have worn the uniform over the last century. One of the most beloved figures in Red Sox history was honored on Sunday at Fenway Park. Boston paid tribute to Johnny Pesky in a ceremony after the team’s 2-1 victory over Baltimore. Pesky – who spent much of his life affiliated with the Red Sox as a player, coach, manager, broadcaster and ambassador – died on August 13 at the age of 93. Current and former Red Sox players like Carlton Fisk, Pedro Martinez, Roger Clemens, Bill Lee, Jim Rice and Dustin Pedroia shared stories about the man who could have generated Hall of Fame worthy numbers if he had played the three seasons he spent serving in the military during World War II. During his rookie season in 1942, Pesky finished third in American League Most Valuable Player Award voting with a .331 average and an American League-leading 205 hits. From 1943 to ...

Offseason Moves, Free Agency Will Be Key to Red Sox Revitalization in 2013

It's official, and it has been for a while. The Red Sox will not make the playoffs, and they also will suffer their first losing season since 1997. As the top five teams from the AL and NL begin their preparations for the postseason, calendars in New England can begin the countdown until spring training in 2013. With the hot stove only months away, a plethora of questions await...

Drake Britton Takes Big Strides Toward Becoming Boston's Next Left-Handed Starting Pitcher (Video)

Drake Britton could be in the Red Sox' starting rotation before you know it. Britton started his 2012 campaign in Single-A Salem and pitched to a 3-5 record and 5.80 ERA. That was good enough to get him a promotion to Double-A Portland, where he pitched much better. In 16 starts with the Sea Dogs, he went 4-7 with a 3.72 ERA. Britton attributes much of his recent success to his...

Ryan Kalish Likely Out for Rest of the Season as Effects of Offseason Surgeries Linger

BOSTON -- Ryan Kalish hasn't started in a game since Sept. 9 and played in a game since Sept. 16. And don't expect to make any more appearances for the rest of the season. Before Sunday's game against the Orioles, Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine confirmed that -- barring an emergency -- the team would shut Kalish down. "I would think unless an emergency arises I...

Clay Buchholz Continues to Shine, Takes Amica Pitcher of the Week Honors

It's called karma. Clay Buchholz started the year picking up victories where he really had no business winning, going 4-1 over his first seven starts despite a 8.31 ERA. Over the last couple of months, though, karma has been paying him back. Buchholz has been fantastic for the Red Sox, but the wins have been harder to come by. On Thursday night, Buchholz pitched his latest gem...

Cody Ross Focuses on Staying Positive Amidst Red Sox' First Losing Season Since 1997

Cody Ross has been on both sides of the baseball pyramid. With the San Francisco Giants in 2010, the outfielder reached the pinnacle of Major League Baseball by winning the World Series. This season, with the Red Sox -- and also in the past with the Marlins -- he's endured life at the bottom of the barrel. Ross said he understands losing can take a mental toll on players. That...

Cody Ross' Defense, Felix Doubront's Pitching Heroics Stave Off Sweep From Orioles

Recap: Some late game magic gives Sox a 2-1 victory.

Dustin Pedroia & Cody Ross hit back to back doubles in the bottom of the eighth off of Luis Ayala to give the Sox a 2-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles.  It was another low scoring affair even though the Sox had plenty of chances to blow this game open. The biggest one was in the fourth where they had two on with nobody out and they barely managed to get a run thanks...

Red Sox Shift Offensive Load to Younger Players as They Chase Late-Season Wins

Editor's note: The temperature gauge is a Bill James-created statistic that measures how hot or cold hitters are. We will spotlight Red Sox and opposing team temperatures on game days. The Baltimore Orioles are in position to win their division for the first time in 15 years. The Red Sox, on the other hand, are just trying to end on a good note. Although their year hasn't...

Maybe Replacement Umpires Did in the Sox

"Can I see some ID?"Jon Lester -- highest ERA of his career (4.96).Clay Buchholz -- 6 strikeouts per nine innings, lowest of his career.Alfredo Aceves -- 1.295 WHIP, highest of his career.Aaron Cook -- 1.3 home runs per nine innings, highest of his career.OK, so umpires don't affect home runs ...
