Third baseman Chris Johnson was acquired from Houston for Class AA Mobile players Marc Krauss and Bobby Borchering on Sunday morning. Johnson, who was hitting .279 with eight home runs and 41 RBIs this season, is to report to the D-backs in Los Angeles on Monday. "He has power. I think this ballpark will help him," D-backs general manager Kevin Towers said. "I think coming to a contender will hopefully energize him. It's been pretty tough over there, I'm sure, the last couple of years." Johnson, 27, was 4-for-11 with three doubles and two RBIs in a three-game series at Chase Field last week. The D-backs will make a corresponding roster move Monday.

Johnson quickly makes his presence felt with Diamondbacks

The Arizona Diamondbacks made another roster tweak Monday when they designated Lyle Overbay for assignment to make room for new third baseman Chris Johnson. The move left the D-backs with one true first baseman, Paul Goldschmidt, and five infielders who play primarily shortstop or third base as the non-waiver trading deadline approaches. Johnson, obtained from Houston on Sunday...

Kennedy getting in a groove, as are D-backs

PHOENIX -- Ian Kennedy appears to be settling into the sort of groove that enabled him to win 21 games last season. Just in time. Kennedy has won three straight starts after making a few mechanical tweaks, and even giving up three bases-empty home runs to the Mets Ike Davis could not dim his mood after the Diamondbacks seventh victory of the homestand, a 6-3 win that brought the...

Sources: D-backs trying to land ace

Arizona Diamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers likes to refer to the final hours before the non-waiver deadline as "the lightning round." This year, Towers wants to make some thunder. The Diamondbacks are trying to pull off a blockbuster for a premier starting pitcher, according to major-league sources. The identity of the pitcher is not known. While Philadelphia...

Red Sox Acquire Craig Breslow from Arizona

The Red Sox have acquired left handed relief pitcher Craig Breslow. The Red Sox are sending Matt Albers and Scott Podsednik to the Arizona Diamondbacks in return. Breslow was previously a member of the Red Sox organization in 2006 and 2007. He pitched 12 innings for the big league club in 2006 but did not pitch in Boston in 2007. He was called up in September when rosters were expanded...

Diamondbacks 7, Dodgers 2

Chris Johnson hit a grand slam in his first game with the Arizona Diamondbacks and Paul Goldschmidt hit a three run shot in the first inning - both off Aaron Harang - in a 7-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday night. Trevor Cahill (9-9) allowed a run and six hits over six innings with four strikeouts and three walks. The right-hander, acquired from Oakland in a multiplayer...

D-backs trying to close gap with Giants

Strong play at home has turned the Arizona Diamondbacks into a contender in the NL West. R.A. Dickey and the New York Mets have done the complete opposite in their division race. With a series against one of the teams they're chasing in the West looming, the Diamondbacks look to conclude this 10-game homestand with an eighth victory Sunday against the Mets. Arizona (51-50...

Loss aside, D-backs confident as they hit road

PHOENIX -- A win Sunday certainly would have given the Diamondbacks a nice feeling to take with them as they begin a 10-game road trip starting Monday, but even with a 5-1 loss and series split with the Mets, they reiterated that they feel good about where they are and how they're playing. Now 4 12 games behind the NL West co-division leaders, the Dodgers and Giants, the D-backs...

Harang slammed in loss to D-backs

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Chris Johnson hit a grand slam in his first game with the Arizona Diamondbacks and Paul Goldschmidt hit a three run shot in the first inning -- both off Aaron Harang -- in a 7-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday night. Trevor Cahill (9-9) allowed a run and six hits over six innings with four strikeouts and three walks. The right-hander, acquired...

Diamondbacks acquire Chris Johnson from Astros

The Arizona Diamondbacks have acquired Chris Johnson from the Houston Astros for minor league outfielders Marc Krauss and Bobby Borchering, the teams announced. Johnson is currently hitting .279/.329/.428 with eight homers and 41 RBIs in 368 plate appearances. He has logged time at the corner infield and outfield positions but is primarily considered a third baseman, which was an...

Pre-Game: New York Mets (48-53) @ Arizona Diamondbacks (51-50)

Not even a three home run night from Ike Davis can save this team.  Last night, Ike hit three solo home runs and added another single later in the game, to finish four for four on the night.  Starter Chris Young continued his batting practice tour across the United States, by allowing six runs in four innings, taxing the bullpen again.  David Wright had a chance in the ninth inning...

Report: Red Sox Acquire Craig Breslow From Diamondbacks

The Red Sox made a move with about an hour to go before the trade deadline on Tuesday, and it was of little significance. The Sox bolstered their left-handed relief corps by dealing a right-hander when they acquired Craig Breslow from the Arizona Diamondbacks for Matt Albers and outfielder Scott Podsednik, according to Jack Magruder of FOXSportsArizona.com. #Dbacks if Breslow to...

Latest on Drew

It is not a certainty that the Arizona Diamondbacks will trade shortstop Stephen Drew. Club officials are trying to decide whether to give the bulk of playing time at short to Drew or Willie Bloomquist, according to major-league sources. If their answer is Bloomquist, the team will trade Drew. The Oakland Athletics, who are interested in Drew, are not the front-runner to acquire...
