LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Chris Johnson hit a grand slam in his first game with the Arizona Diamondbacks and Paul Goldschmidt hit a three run shot in the first inning -- both off Aaron Harang -- in a 7-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday night. Trevor Cahill (9-9) allowed a run and six hits over six innings with four strikeouts and three walks. The right-hander, acquired from Oakland in a multiplayer trade last December, is 3-0 with a 1.85 ERA in four career starts against the Dodgers. Johnson, acquired Sunday in a trade with Houston, started at third base and gave the D-backs a 7-0 lead with his second career slam. It followed a two-out intentional walk to lefty-swinging Miguel Montero, who was 8 for 15 lifetime against Harang at that point -- and had reached base safely in 18 of his previous 24 plate appearances overall. In Johnson's previous at-bat, he grounded into an inning-ending double play with the bases loaded. Harang (7-6) gave up a season-high seven runs over five innings, along with nine hits and three walks. The 35-year-old right-hander is 1-7 with a 3.26 ERA in his last 12 starts against the Diamondbacks since beating them in consecutive starts with Cincinnati back in August 2003. During that stretch, they have homered off him 10 times. The Dodgers, who concluded their 7-3 road trip with a three-game sweep at San Francisco that pulled them into a tie for the NL West lead, were coming off their first back-to-back shutouts of the season. But Harang found himself trailing 3-0 after just eight pitches, as Goldschmidt deposited his 1-0 offering behind the center field fence for his 14th homer after singles by Gerardo Parra and Aaron Hill. Cahill, who allowed first-inning runs in each of his previous seven outings, gave up a leadoff walk to Mark Ellis and a single by Juan Rivera -- who came in 1 for 15 against the right-hander. But Matt Kemp struck out and Andre Ethier grounded into a double play. Ethier, who had 55 RBIs in his first 63 games to lead the NL, has only six in 29 games and 102 at-bats since then -- and none in his last nine contests. Cahill, who came in with the second-best groundball-to-flyball ratio in the NL behind St. Louis' Jake Westbrook, escaped a jam in the third when Rivera grounded into an inning-ending double play. The Dodgers had runners at the corners in the fourth, but Luis Cruz flied out. He was 0 for 4, ending his career-best hitting streak at 12 games. The Dodgers' runs came on an RBI groundout by Jerry Hairston Jr. in the sixth inning and an RBI double by Kemp in the eighth against former Dodger Takashi Saito. NOTES: Johnson is the first player in the Diamondbacks' 15-year history to hit a grand slam in his first game with the club. ... Arizona 1B Lyle Overbay was designated for assignment to free up a roster spot for Johnson. ... 3B Hanley Ramirez was 0 for 4 with a stolen base in his first home game for the Dodgers since they acquired him and LHP Randy Choate last Wednesday in a trade that sent Nathan Eovaldi and minor league RHP Scott McGough to Miami. In his 18 previous games at Dodger Stadium, Ramirez batted .388 with three homers and 10 RBIs. ... Cahill is 9-0 with a 2.37 ERA in 10 starts this season when getting three or more runs of support, and 0-9 with a 5.23 ERA in his other 11 starts.

D-backs acquire Astros third baseman Johnson

PHOENIX -- The Diamondbacks acquired third baseman Chris Johnson from the Astros on Sunday, bolstering a position that has seen limited production all season. The trade, which was announced early Sunday to explain Johnson's absence from the Astros lineup, sends D-backs minor league outfielders Marc Krauss and Bobby Borchering to Houston. The D-backs drafted Borchering, a 21...

Grand debut for Johnson as D-backs close gap

LOS ANGELES -- The son of a major league player and later a coach, Chris Johnson grew up in the clubhouse, learning his baseball lessons first-hand. Tread softly. Blend. Introduce yourself with your play. A grand slam in your debut can crack the ice. Johnson has never played in a pennant race, but he brought the Diamondbacks another game closer to one this season with his slam...

Third-Place Diamondbacks Buy Chris Johnson

Of course that title isn’t fair to the Diamondbacks in a season that features two wild cards. The Diamondbacks are a game over .500, four and a half out of first in the West, and five and a half games out of the second Wild Card slot. They have the sixth-best run differential in the National League. But, given the fact that the wild card slots are not full playoff spots, maybe...

Diamondbacks get 3B Johnson from Astros

The Houston Astros traded starting third baseman Chris Johnson to the Arizona Diamondbacks for two minor leaguers on Sunday. Houston general manager Jeff Luhnow said that the Astros got infielder Bobby Borchering and outfielder Marc Krauss in the deal. Johnson was hitting .279 with eight home runs and 41 RBIs in 92 games for the Astros this season. He has spent his entire four...

Houston continues to purge, sends Johnson to Arizona

I'm not sure if the Astros are ever going to stop trading this summer. Today, they've dealt third baseman Chris Johnson to the Diamondbacks (who just traded their third baseman, Ryan Roberts, to Tampa Bay) in exchange for prospects Bobby Borchering and Marc Krauss. The news was first reported by Brian McTaggart of MLB.com. Johnson is a guy who has just never been able...

D-backs acquire Astros' 3B Johnson

The going-young Houston Astros traded third baseman Chris Johnson to the Arizona Diamondbacks for two minor leaguers on Sunday. Houston obtained infielder Bobby Borchering and outfielder Marc Krauss in the trade, Houston's fifth this month. After opening the season with a payroll of about $61 million, the Astros have jettisoned veterans earning a combined $49 million. Jed Lowie...

Johnson quickly makes his presence felt with Diamondbacks

The Arizona Diamondbacks made another roster tweak Monday when they designated Lyle Overbay for assignment to make room for new third baseman Chris Johnson. The move left the D-backs with one true first baseman, Paul Goldschmidt, and five infielders who play primarily shortstop or third base as the non-waiver trading deadline approaches. Johnson, obtained from Houston on Sunday...

The Arizona Diamondbacks have acquired Chris Johnson from the Houston Astros for minor league outfielders Marc Krauss and Bobby Borchering, the teams announced. He has logged time at the corner infield and outfield positions but is primarily considered a third baseman, which was an...

Houston Finds Value in Return for Replaceable Part

Jeff Luhnow is at it again. The Houston Astros general manager has flipped starting third baseman Chris Johnson to the playoff-hungry Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for two fringe-B-level prospects. The approach being utilized by Houston is an excellent one. The organization does not have highly-sought-after commodities to trade (Carlos Lee, Brandon Lyon, Wandy Rodriguez, Johnson...

What Johnson trade means for Diamondbacks

Third base is a position of scarcity in the major leagues. The Arizona Diamondbacks acquired a decent one on Sunday, and they’ve got another coming at Double A. Chris Johnson, obtained from the Houston Astros for minor-league outfielders Marc Krauss and Bobby Borchering, has a 105 OPS-plus in 368 plate appearances this season, with 100 considered league average. The D-backs...

The Arizona Diamondbacks designated veteran first baseman Lyle Overbay for assignment on Monday to free up a roster spot for third baseman Chris Johnson. The Diamondbacks got Johnson in a trade with Houston on Sunday. The 35-year-old Overbay batted .292 in 45 games with two homers and 11 RBIs. He started 21 games and was used mostly as a pinch-hitter. Overbay began his big league...

Astros end their misery with win

The Astros ended their team-record losing streak at 12 games, beating the Pittsburgh Pirates 9-5 Sunday behind three hits and three RBIs from Marwin Gonzalez. Hours after Houston traded third baseman Chris Johnson to Arizona - the Astros' fifth deal of the month - Jordan Schafer homered and drove in three runs. Houston, a big league-worst 35-68, won for only the third time...
