Found January 22, 2013 on Mets Merized Online:
Updated by Craig Lerner on 1/22 So if you haven’t heard the latest, here it is. Jon Heyman was on MLB Network this evening and reported that the the Mets have been discussing Michael Bourn quite often lately. I’m trying to process the possibility that my Mets are seriously considering signing the former Brave and forfeiting their first round pick to do so. I have only one opinion on this matter. I hope Jon Heyman is wrong!!! Updated 1/20 Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe says this morning that “the Mets are not out of the picture if the price and length of commitment come down” on free agent outfielder Michael Bourn. As you can read below, I don’t see Bourn and the Mets as a match for the reasons I specified, chief among them being that it would cost the Mets their first round pick. Original Post 1/15 I don’t understand why I continue to read posts and comments about the Mets needing to sign center fielder Michael Bourn. Why? I look at Bourn’s age (30) and his career numbers, and...

Michael Bourn Probably Will End Up on the New York Mets

Michael Bourn remains unsigned. The Mets have not signed a single major league free agent all offseason (is that possible?). As the offseason winds down and as the Mets deal with a loophole in the MLB collective bargaining agreement, the two may be coming to a match. The Mets have...

Report: Mets interested in Bourn

The New York Mets remain interested in free-agent Michael Bourn, but their interest is tempered by draft-pick compensation rules, according to a New York Daily News report. A team that signs Bourn must surrender a draft pick, since Bourn declined the Braves' qualifying offer over the winter. The Mets own the 11th overall pick, even though their 74-88 record was the 10th-worst...

Top 10 reasons why the Phillies signed Delmon Young

Reason #11: He Sells Newspapers! 10) Michael Bourn is a much better player, but getting him involves talking to that icky Boros guy9) Wanted to make Ryan Howard feel fast and spry when he comes in for Young at first as a defensive replacement8) Want to recreate that 1970s feel with Ben Revere as Garry Maddux and Young as Greg Luzinksi7) Taking a big dump on Domenic Brown is something...

The Red Sox need to sign Kyle Lohse and Michael Bourn

The Red Sox have been busy this off-season, but you wouldn’t know it. Boston has quietly signed a number of complimentary players to round out their depleted roster. Last season the Sox unloaded Adrian Gonzalez, Carl “Mr. DL” Crawford and Josh “PBR” Beckett sending the trio to the L.A. Dodgers (thanks Magic they’re all yours now) freeing up a significant amount of...

The Bourn Ultimatum: Should We Or Shouldn’t We?

The Mets want Michael Bourn, but not at the risk of losing their first round draft pick according to John Harper of the Daily News. No surprise there, but even if they could get MLB to protect their pick, are they suddenly going to splurge with the money it would take to sign the Scott Boras client? Or is this just another attempt to dupe fans into thinking that the Mets can still...

Why aren't the Mets grabbing some of these MiLB

I've said all along I don't expect the Mets to be involved in the big name free agents like Michael Bourn and I don't really blame them for that, Bourn at this point a move like that really makes very little sense. The Mets are rebuilding, spending on a big piece really isn't making them a contender this year and wont be around long enough to be part of the winning...

Bourn vs. Papelbon: a Pitcher Pace Case Study

FanGraphs keeps track of pitcher Pace, which you already knew. Here’s a definition of what pitcher Pace is, in case you need to brush up. The data comes from PITCHf/x timestamps, and while Pace doesn’t have any meaningful correlation with wins and losses — that is, it doesn’t make you better to speed up or slow down — it does have a meaningful correlation with what we might...

Rosenthal: Zero Chance Mets sign Michael Bourn

According to Jon Harper of the Daily News, the New York Mets have spoken to the agents of free-agent outfielder, Michael Bourn, and would have a lot more interest in signing the 30-year-old speedster if it would not cost them their 2013 first round pick: #bbpBox_294263563709730818 a { text-decoration:none; color:#0084B4; }#bbpBox_294263563709730818 a:hover { text-decoration:underline...

Rosenthal: Mets Want To Sign Bourn To Longterm Backloaded Deal

According to what a source told Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports, the Mets have sincere interest in signing free-agent outfileder Michael Bourn to a long-term deal, but that any deal will likely be backloaded. I thought that was something we were getting away from because it was hazardous to our health? Backloaded deals, future annuity payments, deferred salaries, lot’s of the same...

The Most Interesting Landing Places For Michael Bourn

With less than 22 days before Spring Training officially starts, a few high-profile free agents still haven't signed with major league teams. Players like Kyle Lohse, Shaun Marcum, and Joe Saunders* are still looking for contracts, probably at least in part due to the new rules about draft pick compensation. But the best player available is still probably former Phillies / Astros...

Examinining The CBA Rule And Predicting The Probable Mets Outcome

Updated 5:00 PM Adam Rubin, who knows a heck of a lot more about this than I do, has spent a great deal of time today examining all the intricacies of the CBA rule that the Mets are petitioning MLB to change. Rubin did a thorough examination of the language in the CBA and concluded that rule is very clear that only 10 picks are protected no matter the circumstances, and that pool...

Mets Seek Ruling From MLB To Protect Their First Round Pick

According to John Harper of the Daily News, the New York Mets are appealing to Major League Baseball to protect their first round pick. The Mets initially had the 10th overall pick in the MLB Draft in June, which is automatically protected. But when the Pittsburgh Pirates failed to sign their No. 1 draft pick and were put back in Top 10, it pushed the Mets out of the top ten and...

Daily Friar 1.24.13

It was a big evening and early morning for Major League Baseball so far today. Some of the bigger free agent names have been locked up and a huge trade finally happened that involves a team from the NL West. There is still one big name out there right now on the free agent market that hasn’t signed yet and that is Michael Bourn. He will sign eventually, we all know that. It is...
