Found July 17, 2012 on Extra Pine Tar:

He was supposed to be an ace, the stopper, one of the best lefties in the game. Instead he’s been mediocre, and that may even be giving him too much slack.

Jon Lester is the 90th overall ranked starting pitcher in ESPN standard leagues. He’s got an ERA in the mid 4′s and a WHIP that doesn’t inspire confidence in anyone except the opposing team. He also owns one of the worst first inning ERA’s in all of baseball. Not exactly what you want out of your ace, stopper, one of the best lefties in the game.

There was a lot wrong with the Red Sox first half and Jon Lester is far from the only problem. But  with the the positives since the All Star break, he could be a big part of the solution. If he can come back from his self described “********* first half.” Then maybe the Red Sox could find that ace that they have been desperately looking for ever since Josh Beckett stopped caring.

Catching the Yankees may be out of the question but the Sox are only a game out of the Wild Card right now. A statement game from Lester would certainly announce to the rest of the leaugue – and the fans – that the “varsity” really is back.

Now is the time for Jon Lester to pitch like everyone has expected him to.

Travis Wood? More Like Kerry Wood, Eh?

Okay, so that may be a bit of an overstatement but the guy has been good. In his last four starts (all wins) he’s only given up three runs. As long as he continues to pitch his was out of jams he should be able to compensate for the fact that the Cubs struggle to score runs.

Carlos Villaneuva Is Worth A Stream

The last two times out as a starter he hasn’t given up a run and has struckout 15 hitters. His next start is against Boston, but the Red Sox lineup is more unpredictable than a meth addict. If you need a one day stream, Villaneuva is your man come Saturday. And no, I don’t think there’s any relation to Charlie, and I as far as I know Carlos doesn’t have alopecia.

Derek Holland Is Back To His “Normal” Self

He’s a weird guy with a great Harry Carry impersonation, but up until recently he hadn’t been pitching like we had become accustomed to. With a WHIP close to one and only three earned runs given up so far in July – weird may be good.

Your Morning Dump...where Jon Lester continues to struggle

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump. Have the Red Sox gone to every member of the organization, sought their input and tried to implement their ideas and suggestions in order to fix Lester? Let’s hope so, because if any member of this rotation...

What is wrong with Jon Lester?

Jon Lester struggled again Tuesday night, leading many to ask what is wrong with him. I refuse to believe that Jon Lester could, almost miraculously, just lost the ability to be a front-line starting pitcher for the Boston Red Sox. Since 2008, Lester has been one of the most valuable pitchers on the Boston Red Sox staff and in the entire American League. A tall, left handed pitcher...

Jon Lester Frustrated With Continued Struggles on Mound for Red Sox (Video)

Jon Lester was once again off the mark on Tuesday, lasting only four inning against the White Sox and allowing six runs. The 2012 season has been one to forget for Lester, and the Red Sox ace is certainly feeling the frustration. Physically, Lester says he has no issues, but the bad starts continue to pile up. The three-run home run Lester allowed to Kevin Youkilis only added insult...

Red Sox Need Lester of Years Past

Jon Lester was tabbed as the Opening Day starter, but this season he has not pitched liked an ace. It is no secret that Lester, along with Josh Beckett and Clay Buchholtz have not pitched to their full capabilities this season. However, Beckett and Buchholtz have shown stretches of dominance, but Lester has yet to find his old self. Lester (5-6, 4.49 ERA) will...

Jon Lester Must Overcome Mental Roadblocks in Order to Reclaim Role as Leader of Red Sox Staff

Editor's note: is going to tell the story of the 2012 Red Sox in Bobby Valentine’s words. Each game day, we will select the best Valentine quote that sums up the day for the Red Sox. Another Jon Lester start, and another Red Sox loss in the books. Boston's No. 1 starter heading into the 2012 season has been anything but an ace so far, and Tuesday night proved no...

What's Wrong With Jon Lester?

The enthusiasm generated by the nearly simultaneous returns of Jacoby Ellsbury and Carl Crawford was stopped dead in its tracks on Tuesday night in Fenway Park with what can be summed up in six words - what is wrong with Jon Lester?Lester (pictured) had another subpar outing lasting just 4 innings.  He was charged with 6 runs on 7 hits and 3 walks in the Red Sox 7-5 loss to the...

Lester continues to put Red Sox in an early hole

By Jeff Louderback Jon Lester continued his season-long trend of putting the Red Sox in a hole during his start against the White Sox on Tuesday night. The result was a 7-5 loss at Fenway Park. The left-hander allowed two runs in the first, and after Boston tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the first, Lester served up an RBI double to Alejandro De Aza with...

Lester’s Lost His Touch

Carl Crawford has impressed all since returning from the disabled list, looking like the player he once was in Tampa Bay. Maybe the Boston Red Sox should do with Jon Lester what they did with Daniel Bard. Because sending him out there every fifth day seems to hurt rather than help the team, resulting in losses almost every time out. Last night, Lester turned in yet another poor...

Afternoon Red Sox Delight - 7/17

After beating the Youks 5-1 last night, the Boston Red Sox look to take another win tonight in the second game of a three-game set with the Chicago White Sox at historic Fenway Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. and will be broadcast on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the White Sox television market, you can watch the game on WCIU. If you can&...

Game Picks - Wednesday: July 18, 2012

Yesterday was a struggle as every other pick the entire evening was incorrect. Jon Lester was terrible...again. The Orioles were terrible...again. The Cardinals had a man on first and third with no outs in the ninth and could not get a run home to lose by a run. Barry Zito won again. But the most fun incorrect pick was the Mets. First that pick looked flat out wrong as the Nationals...

Red Sox/White Sox Series Preview

By What better way to utilize your free MLB picks than to use them on what should be an excellently fought series between the Red Sox and White Sox at Fenway. Boston opened up the second half of the season with a 2-1 series win over the Rays in Tampa. The Red Sox are now 45-44 on the season in the always difficult AL East. This week we’ll witness a series everyone’s...

Lester looking for mojo in second half

Start 'Em Anibal Sanchez (@CHC, @PIT) After flaunting a 2.56 ERA at the end of May, Sanchez has been hit with a dose of reality, getting rocked for 30 runs in his past seven outings, five of which have resulted in losses for the Marlins. Sanchez's upcoming slate, however, should provide a platform to bounce back, taking on middling offenses in the Pirates and Cubbies...

White Sox 7, Red Sox 5

BOSTON – The "Yooook" you might have heard at Fenway Park on Tuesday night was for returning hero Kevin Youkilis. The "boooo" you might have heard was for Red Sox lefty Jon Lester. Youkilis, again treated royally by the Boston fans he left when he was traded to Chicago last month, hammered a three-run homer off old pal Lester in the fourth inning, leading...

Youkilis' homer helps his new Sox beat his old Sox

BOSTON -- The "Yooook" you heard Tuesday night at Fenway Park was for returning hero Kevin Youkilis. The "boooo" you heard was for Red Sox lefty Jon Lester. Youkilis, again treated royally by the Boston fans he left when he was traded to Chicago last month, hammered a three-run homer off old pal Lester in the fourth inning, leading the White Sox to a 7-5 win...
