I mentioned Sunday that the most important and impressive part of the win against the Angels was the apparent return of Jonathan Broxton's velocity on his fastball. I am not the only person who noticed and are willing to admit a bit of excitement about this fact. J.P Breen on Fan Graphs: The early results indicate that Broxton has turned a corner and should produce results closer to the strong 2006-2009 seasons, rather than the lackluster 2010-2011 seasons. The swinging strikes had been on the decline in each of the past two years, but he generated six swings-and-misses on Sunday on only fourteen pitches. While that 42.86% SwStr% is certainly not sustainable throughout the course of the season, it serves as a positive harbinger for subsequent performances as the season wears on. Perhaps the most encouraging aspect to Broxton’s inning of work on Sunday was the rebound in velocity. His once overpowering fastball had decreased in velocity over the past couple of seasons, ...

Jonathan Broxton Blows Save by Hitting Consecutive Batters

The Kansas City Royals took a chance on Jonathan Broxton this offseason. The mammoth, hard-throwing right-handed reliever lost his spot as the Los Angeles Dodgers’ closer last season because of how shaky he was in clutch situations. But the Royals took a flyer on him and were hoping he could revive his career. With Joakim Soria, the team’s All-Star closer, out for the season...

Has Jonathan Broxton Returned To Form?

Many writers scoffed when Ned Yost and the Kansas City Royals handed the closer’s role to right-hander Jonathan Broxton this spring. After all, Broxton is returning from an elbow injury that rendered him ineffective (5.63 FIP) and held him to only 14 appearances last season, while fellow right-hander Greg Holland burst onto the scene in 2011 with an 11.10 K/9 strikeout rate and...

Broxton wild as A's rally for 5-4 win in 12

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- Jonathan Broxton hit Jonny Gomes on the first pitch he threw with the bases loaded in the 12th inning, forcing Jemile Weeks home for the winning run in the Oakland Athletics' 5-4 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday. Moments earlier, Broxton (0-1) plunked new A's cleanup hitter Yoenis Cespedes on the first pitch to load the bases and the...

Danny Duffy Fans 8 In Royals Win

Ok, I'm not going to lie... I went to bed at the rain delay. Yes, I know the game was nearly over, but I just wanted to lay in bed and catch up on the new season of "The Killing". Awesome show, by the way... and the game never restarted, so I dodn't miss anything as the Royals won 3-0 in the rain-shortened game. My early bow-out aside, Danny Duffy kept the streak...

A's fans show love to Francoeur on "BACON TUESDAY"

Last season in Spetember, Jeff Francoeur and the 59-83  traveled to Oakland to take on the 64-77 Athletics. At the time it didn’t seem to be a matchup of much significance, however it marked the first ever “Bacon Tuesday” held by A’s fans at the Oakland Coliseum. Francoeur was so moved by this monumental moment in meat eating history, that the next day, as he took the...

What Happened Last Night?

Last night the Royals kicked off their series with the Oakland A's and unless you're a night owl, you probably did stay up to watch it. The Royals lost 1-0 as they wasted a solid first effort by Luis Mendoza, who seems to be trying on the Bruce Chen magic when it comes to pitching. He's getting people out, but we really don't know why. The bigger story in the...

Who's the pizza delivery guy in right field?

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) Pizza delivery, courtesy of Jeff Francoeur. The Kansas City Royals' right fielder had 20 personal pizzas delivered Wednesday to Oakland Athletics fans in section 149. The gesture came a day after the second annual "Bacon Tuesday," as it has become known. Last year, Francoeur tossed a ball wrapped in a 100 bill into the elevated seats above his...
