If Jonathan Papelbon had his way, umpire D.J. Reyburn would be packing his bags and heading for the minors.

Papelbon, who suffered a loss to the Dodgers after surrendering a run in the ninth inning on Monday night, was visibly upset after the game. The Phillies closer disagreed with a call made by Reyburn, who was serving as the home-plate umpire, which led to a bit of a tirade in the Philadelphia locker room following the contest.

"He probably needs to go back to Triple-A...You're up in the big leagues to do a good job and when you don't do a good job you should be demoted or fired," Papelbon said. "It's just like anybody's job. If I don't do my job, I go down to Triple-A. There's no room for that up here. It's not a knock on the umpires. It's the integrity of the game. You want to be able to go out there and play the game the way it should be played. All night long, from [Dodgers starter Clayton] Kershaw to [Phillies starter] Vance [Worley], all the way to the ninth inning, it affected the outcome of the game."

Papelbon's main gripe was that he believed he had struck out Dee Gordon looking to begin the ninth, but Reyburn disagreed. Instead, the at-bat continued, Gordon hit a triple, and he eventually came around to score what proved to be the game-winning run.

This came in a game that evolved into a pitchers' duel from the third inning on, with neither team surrendering a run until that point. It remains to be seen if Papelbon will be slapped with a fine for his postgame remarks, but it wouldn't be all that surprising given how candid he was.

"I thought [Reyburn] was terrible –- all day. It wasn't just that pitch," Papelbon said. "All I wanted to know was if he could throw me out for what I was thinking, and if he could, I thought he sucked. It's that simple."

For the record, neither Papelbon or Reyburn is likely heading to Triple-A any time soon.

Jonathan Papelbon says umpire ‘sucked,’ should be sent down to Triple-A (Video)

Jonathan Papelbon may have taken the loss as the Phillies were defeated 4-3 by the Dodgers on Monday night, but he is not taking the blame. That blame, he says, belongs to home plate umpire D.J. Reyburn. In a 3-3 tie in the ninth, Papelbon allowed a lead-off triple on a 2-2 pitch to Dodgers shortstop Dee Gordon. Papelbon thought he had strike three on the previous pitch, and naturally...

Papelbon is a Closer, Not Just a General Use Pitcher

Jonathan Papelbon sure takes this closer's gig seriously.  The man is more "lights out" than Lidge was in '08 when it's a save situation.  However, flip the script and the man becomes Danys Baez bad.Papelbon in save situations: 15 G, 15 IP, 14 K, 15 SV, 0.00 ERA, 0.60 WHIP.Papelbon in non-save situation: 9 G, 8.1 IP, 13 K, 2 L, 6.48 ERA, 1.56 WHIP.Other...

Phillies' Jonathan Papelbon Doesn't Take Too Kindly to Minor League Umpires

Photo: Philliedelphia/Lindsey Crew Lindsey was in the right place to catch Jonathan Papelbon after the top of the 9th inning last night en route to a Phillies 4-3 loss. As it turns out, the ball probably was not a strike, but there were issues with the umpire all night.  It appeared that since he knew he was done for the night anyway, he might as well risk an ejection.  After...

Umpires Become the Story Once Again in Phillies Loss

It is a real shame when the focus of any baseball game becomes the umpires instead of the actual plays. But this seems to be an ever increasing trend as MLB continues to sweep bad umpiring under the rug. After a 4-3 loss to the Dodgers last night, Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon got all bent out of shape about the performance of home plate umpire D.J. Reyburn. Papelbon told reporters...
