When the Oakland A’s came to visit the Red Sox this past season, most eyes were on Josh Reddick, who had exploded for the A’s since his trade from Boston. But outfielder Jonny Gomes, who was reportedly signed by the Red Sox this week, was also getting a preview of his next baseball home — whether he knew it or not. Gomes and Reddick put on the headsets at Fenway Park for a little chat with the MLB Network during their road trip with the A’s, and they certainly had a good time with the questions. They talked about what it was like for Reddick to return to Fenway Park as well as Gomes’ view of the historic grounds. “All they did here was lose,” Gomes said when lauding the storied Fenway Park and the fans who have kept it a special place for many years no matter the team’s fortunes. Gomes shows off his good-natured spirit, which will be coming to the team’s home clubhouse this season, in the segment. Check it out in the video below, with a hat tip to Peter Abraham for posting it on The...

Redsocks snagging Jonny Gomes

Now and then, despite all the pain and suffering in the world, the political polarity that threatens our nation, the rising sea levels and catastrophic storms, you get a good feeling about the future. That's how I felt yesterday, as I gave thanks for Boston.  Somehow, when Team John Henry last summer sent the Billion Dollar Odd Lots & Overruns Outlet to LA, I didn't see...

Red Sox Offseason News and Notes – November 24, 2012

Now that the Thanksgiving holiday has passed and the winter meetings are less than two weeks away, the Red Sox’ offseason should heat up soon. After signing outfielder Jonny Gomes to a 2-year, $10 million deal on Wednesday, the team is ready to move on to filling the major holes on the roster, including shortstop, [...]

If I Must Own A James Loney Card....

I don't own many James Loney cards, but when I do, they're not cards I seek out. My first ever trade netted me a surprise Loney auto - my only signature of his - and I have a few base cards and the like lying around. However, today's card is one I'm more than happy to own, and it prominently features the former Dodger bust.Of course, as you've probably already...

Red Sox Rumors: Nick Swisher on Boston’s Radar

The Boston Red Sox have free agent outfielder Nick Swisher “on their radar,” reports George A. King III of The New York Post. According to a person with knowledge of the situation the Red Sox have an interest in the switch-hitting right fielder who can also handle first base. Even after signing veteran Jonny Gomes to a two-year contract, the Red Sox...

Report: Mike Napoli Meeting With Red Sox This Weekend in Boston

The Red Sox have long been reported to be interested in catcher/first baseman Mike Napoli, and now it sounds like they’re ready to show him up close what the team can offer. Napoli is visiting Boston this weekend to meet with the Red Sox, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports. Napoli would most likely play first base if he were to sign with Boston, with his catching abilities taking...

Red Sox Don’t Need A Splash To Improve

In this morning’s Notes column, the Boston Globe’s Nick Cafardo suggests that the Red Sox need to ‘make a splash’ to improve but the on-field team and the organisation’s PR record after the disappointment of 2012. Cafardo suggests targeting Josh Hamilton as a free agent or trading for Joe Mauer to address the team’s lack of star power in the every day lineup. Quite...

Happy Gomesgiving

So it ain’t quite like that Thanksgiving past, when Theo and crew broke biscuits with the Schilling family. But the signing of Jonny Gomes reminds us that baseball is moving ever-closer, and we just gotta trust that Ben, like Galactus, has some sort of master plan that hopefully doesn’t include the Earth being torn part [...]

Ft. Myers Mayor regrets building JetBlue Park

Rander Henderson, Mayor of Ft. Myers, belives the city and county would have been better off without JetBlue Park. Fort Myers mayor Randy Henderson told the News-Press that the Lee County region would have been better served to permit the Red Sox to leave the county rather than paying for the construction of a new facility for the Sox, JetBlue Park, which opened in 2012...

Daisuke Matsuzaka Rumors: Could Padres Be a Fit?

With Yu Darvish's success this season, it's easy to forget there was another Japanese phenom who was supposed to light the Majors on fire.  Well, actually there have been numerous Japanese pitchers with high ceilings who fell well short of expectation.  But one such pitcher, Daisuke Matsuzaka fell so famously flat, his name will forever be linked with Japanese pitchers...

Report: Red Sox Still Pursuing Mike Napoli, But Mariners Also in Mix for Free Agent

The Red Sox may soon have to decide just how much they covet Mike Napoli. The Sox have reportedly expressed interest in Napoli this offseason, but according to ESPN’s Jim Bowden, the veteran slugger is seeking a four-year deal. That could toss a wrench into Boston’s plans, as Napoli is reportedly meeting with the Mariners, who could be willing to give him the fourth year he...

Mike Napoli May Not Be Marquee Free Agent, But He’s Likely Best Fit for Red Sox’ First Base Needs

Have you ever saved up for something for a really long time, only to smash open the piggy bank, run out the door and find out that what you wanted isn’t there anymore? That’s sort of where the Red Sox are this free agent season, where they’ve cleared a ton of cap space but don’t have much of a market to go spending in. They want to make wise choices, and they want to contend...

Black Friday musings

-Buck Showalter has been voted Manager of the Year by the Boston chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America. Good for Buck, he deserves the love and the hardware. It is unfortunate that he came up short in the nationwide vote but Bob Melvin’s team did end up winning the AL West, even if they did get a ton of help from a Rangers team that folded in the last month. ...

Dugout Digest - Cyber Monday!

This year on Black Friday, we didn't see any GMs make any big moves for great, low prices, though the Red Sox did overpay for Jonny Gomes on Wednesday. Will we see anything today, on Cyber Monday, or throughout the rest of the week? Perhaps. BJ Upton will reportedly be making a decision on where he'll play in 2013 and beyond this week, and the finalists are reportedly the...
