With the Nationals loss on Sunday, the story of Jordan Zimmermann’s short career repeats itself again.  After 7 innings and only giving up 3 hits, J-Z’s day is over.  Middle reliever Sean Burnett starts off the 8th giving up 3 hits and 2 runs, doesn’t retire one batter and costs Zimm the curly W.

Whether it’s blowing leads or not scoring runs, Jordan Zimmermann cannot catch a break.

In 17 starts, Zimmermann has posted a 5-6 record with a 2.61 ERA in 110.1 innings pitched.  His ERA is 6th best in the National League and best on a Nationals team with two All-Stars atop the rotation.  Among pitchers with at least 100 innings pitched for the NL, Jordan is 3rd in earned runs (32), 6th in walks (22). and 10th in walks and hits per innings pitched (1.12).

Hard to tell if it’s J-Z’s lack of help from the offense or that they want to save the runs for late inning heroics, but he has only got 70 runs in support to his 32 runs given up and somehow has a below .500 record.  This may be solved by’s statistic of a tough loss, in which Zimmerman has the 2nd most in the league with 4.  When a game is pitched at least 6 innings and the pitcher has given up 3 or fewer runs it is considered a quality start; when a pitcher loses a quality start it is deemed a tough loss.  This means in a perfect world where quality starts equate to sure wins, Jordan would be 9-2 and the 3rd Nats pitcher in the 2012 All-Star game.

He seems to be pitching very well coming off Tommy John surgery in 2010 and being restricted to 160 innings last year with an ERA of 3.18, but these outings aren’t equating to wins.

Look for Zimmermann to catch the breaks he wasn’t getting in the spring this fall when he will be bumped up as the number 2 starter when Strasburg hits his inning count and the Nats make their playoff push.

Here's Bryce Harper receiving his NL All-Star jersey from Mike Rizzo

Up above: video of Bryce Harper receiving his NL All-Star jersey from Mike Rizzo on the field at Nationals Park before Sunday's game (video via NatsTown2K10). And here's Harper, via Washington Post, on his upcoming trip to KC: "Going home would have been pretty good. I still get to see my family out there and that’s the biggest thing. I think I’m still...

Teddy at the HR Derby with a shark, Randy Johnson, sausages, pierogis, etc.

Oh, look! There's Teddy in the RF bullpen at Kauffman Stadium in KC during the HR Derby, cavorting with a shark, a Randy Johnson, some sausages, pierogis, etc. We've nothing else to add. Except that if there was a race, the Nationals would have fixed it so Teddy would lose again. Befriend Nats Enquirer on Facebook. Follow on Twitter.

Ryan Zimmerman Engaged

Another hot wife will soon be joining the Baseball’s Hottest Wives fold.  Ryan Zimmerman and Heather Downen have known each other for the past two years.  Ryan is the second highest paid third baseman in the MLB behind only A-Rod and Heather works for an apps development company, but unfortunately its not mine.  They live together in Arlington with their dog Miley.  If you’re...

Handling of Strasburg could be key to Nationals' second half

The Nationals were arguably baseball's biggest surprise in the first half of the season. Now, the big question is if they can keep it up in the homestretch. They ended the first half with a 49-34 record after the Rockies pushed across a run in the ninth to beat the Nats, 4-3, on Sunday. The Nationals go into the All-Star break with a four-game lead over the Braves in ...

President Obama endorses Bryce Harper, says Nationals now his second favorite team.

And now the Washington Nationals bandwagon has a Commander in Chief. At this rate Mr. President, you might want to consider dumping that Joe Biden fellow and going with The Kid. In the video above via KSNV TV in Las Vegas (jump to the final minute), President Obama endorses Bryce Harper, says the Washington Nationals are his second favorite baseball team now: "We were...

Should the Nationals Shut Down Stephen Strasburg Now Or Later?

Stephen Strasburg has been one of the many reasons that the Washington Nationals are a successful ballclub this season. He is 9-4 with a 2.82 ERA. He is also tied for the league lead in strikeouts with 128, tied with Justin Verlander and Felix Hernandez. Nearly two years ago Strasburg underwent Tommy John surgery that [...]

Brett Mooneyham and Prospect Perception

Last Friday night, Washington Nationals 2012 third-round pick Brett Mooneyham made his professional debut in Auburn, New York, against the Hudson Valley Renegades of the New York-Penn League. For those not familiar with the plight of the 6-foot-5 lefty, he initially spurned a seven-figure offer from the San Diego Padres prior to spending four years at Stanford battling inconsistency...

The Nationals, The Orioles And First-Half Dreams To Remember

The 2012 All-Star break is here, and Washington is four games up on the NL East. Baltimore is also second in the AL East, somehow. It’s unclear which is more unlikely, but I will take them both and always remember fondly what was one hell of a half-season of baseball. The Nats, seemingly a year away from entering an extended run as contenders, have baseball’s third-best record...

Bryce Harper with George Brett
