Jordany Valdespin was far from guaranteed a spot on the New York Mets opening day roster, but with his strong Spring campaign continuing through this past weekend, the 25-year-old may very well be on his way to earning just that.  Yesterday the Mets and St. Louis Cardinals were scoreless until the eighth inning, when Valdespin’s single off Edward Mujica plated Travis d’Arnaud, and New York later added two more runs en route to a 3-0 victory. This morning, Mike Puma of the New York Post cited a club official saying Jordany’s bat might help him find his way onto the Mets roster when camp breaks. Photo by Michael G. Baron Jordany Valdespin’s unofficial position as spring training began was “left out,” but his performance in camp is forcing the Mets to reconsider. If Valdespin continues producing, he almost certainly will earn a spot on the opening day roster, a team official said yesterday. “We might need that bat,” the official said. Last season at the major league level for the New York Valdespin hit eight homers in just 191 at-bats, many of which came in dramatic fashion.  In 42 at-bats as a pinch-hitter, ‘Spin’ hit five of his homers and on the season he was also successful in 10 of his 13 stolen base attempts. At the start of Spring Terry Collins said that while Valdespin had worked most recently in Winter ball as an outfielder, the team wanted to get him some time in the infield during the Spring.  Today Jordany will in fact be leading off for the Mets and playing second base as they take on the Detroit Tigers. #bbpBox_311086067392606208 a { text-decoration:none; color:#0084B4; }#bbpBox_311086067392606208 a:hover { text-decoration:underline; } #Mets lineup at Tigers: Valdespin-2B, Tejada-SS, Davis-1B, Duda-LF, Baxter-RF, Buck-C, d’Arnaud-DH, den Dekker-CF, Hicks-3B.
