Final: Twins 5, Pirates 4 (box) WP: Cole De Vries (1-0, 0.00 ERA) LP: Kris Johnson (0-1, 9.00 ERA) SV: Pedro Hernandez (1, 0.00 ERA) Kyle McPherson got the nod on the hill today for the Bucs and pitched two scoreless innings. He gave up one hit, which turned out to be the first hit given up by Pirates’ starters this spring. Pirates’ starting pitchers have still yet to give up a run through the first three games. Jose Tabata went 1 for 2 with a solo home run to left field in the seventh inning off reliever Esmerling Vasquez. Jordy Mercer was 2 for 3 and Travis Snider drove in two runs, going 1 for 1 with a double and two sacrifice flies. Chris Leroux, Phil Irwin, and Ryan Reid combined to retire nine straight batters and three strikeouts as they each pitched a scoreless inning. Jeanmar Gomez got roughed up a bit, giving up four runs on three hits and two walks. Gomez is on the club’s 40-man roster and is out of options, so he is someone to keep an eye on as the spring goes along. Wan...

Tuesday & Wednesday spring game update

There wasn’t much going on in Bradenton on Tuesday, as the Pirates and Orioles were rained out. Today, the Bucs take on the Rays at 1:05 PM. Pirates.com will have the audio webcast. A.J. Burnett will start, and Wandy Rodriguez (Tuesday’s scheduled starter) will follow him. Gerrit Cole will also take the mound this afternoon. Go Bucs.

Clint Barmes is on my list.

I do not appreciate Barmes' contribution to the game today. FYI, tweets like this are welcome: #SocksUp! JONNY! @braveslove — Michelle(@uscfox) February 24, 2013 Tweets like this are not: @braveslove he has given up quite a few homers the past year. — Robert Baker (@baseballfan30) February 24, 2013 1. The Twins in Center Field. What’s the best case scenario?

One of the biggest questions leading to the Twins 2013 is how they plan on filling the hole left by the trade of Ben Revere and Denard Span. There are a handful of candidates for the position; Darin Mastroianni, Aaron Hicks and Joe Benson, with some guys like Clete Thomas nibbline at the edges. The common opinion is that Twins fans would like to get their future started as soon as...

Clint Barmes homers, Pirates beat Braves

BRADENTON, Fla. (AP) -- James McDonald is hardly concerned about the crispness of his fastball or the break on his curveball. And for that matter, the Pittsburgh Pirates' right-hander isn't overly focused on controlling an opponent's running game at the moment. All McDonald really wants out of spring training is to put the ball where it's supposed to go following...

Mauer has high praise for Gibson in Twins loss

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) Joe Mauer thought the scoreboard radar reading of 96 mph on a pitch from Kyle Gibson was a little low. "It seemed like it was 106," Mauer said Sunday. "He was throwing the ball at a good angle. It was the first time I've caught him, so it was good to see him. It's been pretty good to get to know these guys. Once we get out into a game...

Rays need extra innings to beat the Twins

The Tampa Bay Rays got clutch hitting late in the game to beat the Minnesota Twins on Sunday, 10-7 in 10 innings.  Starting pitcher Chris Archer threw nine pitches in is one inning of work. He recorded a strike out and gave up one walk (to Joe Mauer). Jake Odorizzi also pitched well as he threw seven pitches in the second inning to record three outs.. But the real story was the...

Morneau has two hits in Twins' victory

DUNEDIN, Fla. (AP) --Justin Morneau is finding his hitting touch early in preparation for the World Baseball Classic. Morneau had two hits, including an RBI double, and the Minnesota Twins beat the Toronto Blue Jays 8-4 on Tuesday. Morneau and teammate Joe Mauer, both taking part in next month's WBC, made the 2-hour trip from Fort Myers. "Just to get my legs underneath...

High School Football Coach Gets Nailed In Undercover Prostitution Ring And Pulls A Baltche

Hill-Murray School football coach Mark Mauer was busted in a prostitution sting last week. He’s also the cousin of the Minnesota Twins catcher Joe Mauer. The best part about this story is his excuse after getting arrested. According to the police report, Mauer arrived at the hotel about 7:30 p.m. and met with a female undercover officer. Mauer verbally agreed to pay the woman...

Draft Prospect Watch: Week Two Recap

The second weekend of the college baseball season has come to a close and we saw some big games from the top draft-eligible third baseman on Saturday and Sunday. For the most part, it was a good weekend for the players currently rated at the top of the college draft class. Mark Appel and Sean Manaea showed why they will likely go well before the Pirates make their first selection...
