MLB Injury News:
One prominent agent said the Philadelphia Phillies could “surprise
everyone” and sign free agent outfielder Josh Hamilton this offseason, reports
Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.
"Watch out for #phillies to surprise everyone and sign Hamilton,'' said one prominent agent. A scout told me the same thing.

A scout expressed similar sentiments to Crasnick, who added
that Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. has a reputation for “liking the
While the Phillies have reportedly been targeting center
fielders early this offseason, they could be in the market for multiple
outfielders. The team traded veteran outfielders Hunter Pence and Shane
Victorino last summer.
The market for Hamilton continues to be hazy at best, so
speculation such as this figures to be ongoing until it becomes clearer which
teams will actually pursue the slugger. He’s reportedly seeking a seven-year,
$175 million contract, which could certainly limit his number of suitors.

Texas Rangers general manager Jon Daniels will head to Nashville for next week's Winter Meetings with nothing resolved concerning the future of Josh Hamilton.
That's just the way Daniels expected it to be.
"I've maintained contact with (agent) Mike Moye," Daniels said. "The interest has been consistent. The process that we agreed to back in the spring...
Josh Hamilton is a free agent conundrum.
There have been few players in the recent history of free agency that have been such an interesting case as the former MVP outfielder. On the one hand, there are few players in baseball as talented as Hamilton. Though his speed has come down a bit, he’s accurately described as a five-tool player, and his power, in particular, is other worldly...
Yesterday, we brought you the news of the Astros potentially trading closer Wilton Lopez to the Phillies. Well, today it appears that the trade will not be happening after Lopez's physical with the Phillies hadn't gone well. Reportedly, Lopez's elbow is what gave Philadelphia's doctors pause.
The Phillies were reportedly going to send pitcher Tyler Cloyd and catcher...
The Philadelphia Phillies will have to begin their 2013 campaign without All-Star Carlos Ruiz behind the plate. Major League Baseball announced on Tuesday that it had suspended the catcher for 25 games for using the banned amphetamine Adderall.
Ruiz released the following statement:
“I am sincerely regretful for my mistake in taking a prohibited stimulant,” Ruiz said in a release...

Phillies Sign a Catcher
Just before the news of Carlos Ruiz‘s 25-game suspension broke, Jim Salisbury Tweeted the Minor League signing of 33-year old Venezuelan catcher Humberto Quintero. Quintero will likely compete for an Opening Day roster spot with fellow catchers Steven Lerud, who cleared waivers earlier this offseason, and Sebastian Valle, who, as a member of the 40-man...
The baseball offseason is entering its second month, and so far the biggest story has been the Miami Marlins' salary dump.
That's about to change.
The annual winter meetings begin Monday at the Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center in Nashville, Tenn., the ideal site for an event headlined by free agents Zack Greinke and Josh Hamilton.
The elaborate Opryland...
Mike Napoli frightens me.
Everything about him frightens me. When he comes up to bat against the Red Sox, I’m always frightened that he’s going to hit a ball into the last row of the upper deck and then throw his wad of chewing tobacco at the pitcher. I’m frightened when he makes eye contact with the camera. If I saw him in the streets, I’d turn and run the opposite way...
WHERE'S THE BEEF?
The Hall of Fame pitcher-turned-Texas Rangers CEO and President reportedly is working on a book of recipes, fittingly entitled The Nolan Ryan Beef Cookbook.
The agreed-to-but-not-final Wilton Lopez deal that may fall through gives us a little insight as to what the Phillies are thinking. They want a reliever who can be strong in the 8th inning. They want someone young, inexpensive, and who will be around a while. That player could come from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in Jordan Walden, suggests Marcus Morris of Pucktacular...
The Texas Rangers added another arm for spring training by acquiring right-hander Cory Burns from San Diego for a player to be named later or cash considerations.
Burns, who was designated for assignment by the Padres last week, made his major-league debut with San Diego by pitching in 17 games last season. He allowed 11 runs in 18 innings. He spent most of the season in Triple...
One would have thought that the first major news for the Philadelphia Phillies would have been a major signing or a trade. Well, that was not the case today. News broke just recently that Phillies' All Star catcher Carlos Ruiz has been suspended by Major League Baseball for 25 games without pay after testing positive for the use of an amphetamine.
Ruiz was caught using adderall...
Christmas time comes but once a year and the only thing hotter than the chestnuts roasting or hot chocolate is the MLB’s hot stove.
The Red Sox are coming off a tough season in 2012 with a last-place finish in the American League East and 93 losses making it a rather forgettable summer. But with the offseason comes new life and a few big-name free agents could change the tune of...
The clacking you hear is the sound of dominoes falling throughout the major leagues.
Wednesday, B.J. Upton agreed to a five-year, $75.25 million contract with the Atlanta Braves.
Thursday, the Washington Nationals acquired center fielder Denard Span from the Minnesota Twins for pitching prospect Alex Meyer.
A quick assessment of what the moves mean for other players in the Hot Stove...
Tigres del Licey right fielder Engel Beltre broke out of his slump on Monday by clubbing a two-run home run, his first of the Dominican Winter League campaign. Lone Star Dugout takes a look at all of the day's winterball action in the Texas Rangers' system.
