Final: Pirates 3, Astros 2 (12) WP: Tony Watson (3-0, 4.26 ERA) LP: Fernando Rodriguez (1-4, 4.15 ERA) I really don’t want to get into how badly mismanaged this game was by Clint Hurdle, so I’m just going to be very grateful for the win. I’ll take winning a game in which BOTH Rod Barajas and Clint Barmes somehow played first base in. A.J. Burnett was spectacular keeping the Bucs in this one as the offense stumbled throughout the game. In eight innings, he gave up just two runs on six hits. He struck out four and didn’t walk a batter. The Pirates took a 1-0 lead in the first inning with back-to-back doubles by Neil Walker and Andrew McCutchen, but were shut down until they scored on a sacrifice fly by Pedro Alvarez in the 9th inning to tie the game up off Astros’ closer Brett Myers. Clint Barmes, with two outs in the bottom of the 9th, legged out a double to left and Josh Harrison drove him in with a single to win it. Burnett’s start was the 2nd in a row where he pitched eight inning...

Brad Lincoln’s impressive spot start leads Bucs to 3-2 win

Final: Pirates 3, Marlins 2 WP: Brad Lincoln (3-0, 1.33 ERA) LP: Anibal Sanchez (2-1, 2.28 ERA) SV: Joel Hanrahan (7, 3.55 ERA) You can’t ask for any more out of a spot starter. Brad Lincoln, who has dominated in a long relief role, was able to carry over that success in his first start of the year. Over six innings, he gave up just two runs on four hits and one walk while striking...

Following the "book" burns Mills, Astros

When Astro manager elected to replace starting pitcher Wandy Rodriguez after eight innings of three hit ball to go with his closer, Brett Myers to close the game in Pittsburgh on Sunday he was doing what most major league managers would do. He followed the "Book" or the recognized strategic move used in modern baseball. Then he got the pages slammed on his fingers. Myers...

Run-starved Astros dropped by Pirates

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Andrew McCutchen had a solo home run among his four hits, Jose Tabata also homered and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Houston Astros 5-2 on Saturday night. Charlie Morton (2-3) rebounded from consecutive poor starts and allowed one earned run in six innings, and the Pirates matched a season high for runs at PNC Park, winning for the first time in their past three...

Game 34: Pirates 3 Astros 2

It's always amazing to me how quickly an exciting ending wipes away everything frustrating about a baseball game. After Neil Walker and Andrew McCutchen hit back-to-back doubles in the first inning to put the Pirates ahead 1-0, Wandy Rodriguez faced the minimum number of hitters in the second through eighth innings. That resulted in a 2-1 Astros lead going into the bottom of...

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Houston Astros – Game 34

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Houston Astros – Game 33

Hey Nate McLouth…. That guy is awful. He should be cut, tomorrow. I’m not sure why “The Color Purple” himself Clint Hurdle has him batting second. I don’t want it to seem like it’s only Nate’s fault. It definitely isn’t. But he is so bad. The Pirates acquired Jeff Larish… If he is anything more [...]

Pirates Grab Series Opener

In the first of a two game series, the Pittsburgh Pirates took Monday’s game over the Miami Marlins by a final score of 3-2.   The loss prevented the Marlins from reaching three games over .500, something they have yet to do this season.   This result also means Miami will be unable to win a fourth consecutive series as the best they can hope for now is a series split. Anibal...

The most exciting team in the NL Central: The Houston Astros?

Ahh, the NL Central.  Home of the World Champion St. Louis Cardinals.  Home of Superstars Ryan Braun, Joey Votto and Brandon Phillips.  Mancave for upcoming stars Starlin Castro and  Andrew McCutchen.  Lots of intrigue here, but perhaps the most exciting team in the division is the one no one talks about; the team everyone wrote off for 100 losses, last place in the division...
