The MLB season is approximately at its halfway point, and so far, it has not been a good season for most Jewish position players. The most accomplished active Jewish player, Ryan Braun, has been on the DL since June 10th with a bruised right thumb. This is the first ever trip to the disabled list for the five-time All-Star, and he is not expected back until after the All-Star break. In addition, Braun’s name has come up in the biogenesis scandal, and could face a lengthy suspension. Braun is not the only high-profile Jewish player who has spent time on the disabled list this year. Texas Rangers second baseman Ian Kinsler missed about a month with a right intercostal strain, and New York Yankees third baseman Kevin Youkilis has had two stints on the DL, including a back injury that will require surgery and will keep him out of action for another 8-10 weeks. Then there’s Ike Davis. Davis had 32 home runs and 90 RBI for the New York Mets last season, but this season has been abysmal. Davis had a .141 batting average with five home runs and 16 RBI in 55 games until his demotion to AAA Las Vegas on June 10th. Although he was just recently recalled,  he desperately needs to improve his hitting, as his batting average, on-base percentage and slugging percentage are all well below his career averages. When Davis was demoted, infielder Josh Satin, who is also Jewish, took his place. Due to the high number of lefties the Mets faced recently as well and an injury to Lucas Duda, Satin became the Mets’ everyday first baseman, and he has not let them down. The Hidden Hills, CA native is currently batting .353 with one home run and seven RBI in 18 games, and currently has a 10-game hitting streak. Satin has quickly become one of Mets fans’ favorite players, and has inspired the popular Twitter hashtag, #HailSatin. However, for those that don’t know or watch Mets broadcasts, the last name is actually pronounced like the fabric. Regardless, the hashtag is still amazing. With Davis back on the roster, it seems like manager Terry Collins will inexplicably put Davis right back into the starting lineup, moving Satin to the bench. While the benching may derail his hot start, both Mets fans and Jewish baseball fans should be happy that one of their own helped make Mets baseball a lot more exciting over the past month. I hope he can continue to find success as a pinch hitter/spot starter because I love watching Jewish baseball players succeed, and because #HailSatin is too good of a hashtag to go to waste. -Hollenberg
