Nashville Sounds 0 @ Iowa Cubs 5 Logan Watkins had another good day. He was 2-5 with a run scored and a strikeout. He would score once. Brett Jackson 2: The Quest for Curly's Walks did not play in this game. Ian Stewart didn't put a single ball in play: he was 0-2 with 2 strikeouts and 2 walks. The only extra base hit was a double from Brian Bogusevic; everyone else was non-descript. The I-Cubs as a team drew 7 walks and struck out 13 times.  Barret Loux got the start and did very well. He punched 6 out and walked 1, scattering 3 hits en route to a scoreless day. Casey Coleman, Zach Putnam, Rafael Dolis, and Blake Parker each pitched an inning of scoreless relief and none of them gave up a hit. All in all, a dominating pitching performance. The Iowa Cubs are now 5-9 on the season. Tennessee Smokies 8 @ Huntsville Stars 1 All 4 offensive prospects had a nice day today. Matt Szczur went 2-5 with a triple, scoring 2 runs and striking out once. Ronald Torreyes went 1-4 with a double and 2 runs scored. Arismendy Alcantara continues to rebound from a poor last week with a 2-3, 2 RBI, 1 BB performance. Alcantara did have his 7th error of the season, however. That's got to change or there's no way he can stick at SS. He's back up to .288 on the season. Christian Villanueva had a 2-run double in the first and ended up with a 1-4 line with 2 R and 2 RBI. The Smokies as a team only walked twice and struck out 11 times, but were 5 for 14 with RISP. Matt Loosen had a pretty great start. He allowed no runs over 4 IP, with 8 SO and 2 BB to go with 4 hits. The WHIP is 1.500, but he allowed less than half of his balls to enter the field of play. That's a pretty good plan. A.J. Morris needed a good performance and he delivered one also. He allowed a single run over 3 innings of 3 hits, 2 walk, 2 strikeout baseball. His ERA is down to 6.75 on the season. Brian Schlittler cleaned it up with 2 scoreless innings of 3 H, 3 SO. The Smokies are the only good team in the system, with a 9-6 record. They also have a pretty cool stadium. Tampa Yankees 8 @ Daytona Cubs 3 Javier Baez continues to play poorly. He had another 0-4 day with a strikeout and an error. His line sits at .212/.239/.455 this season. Zeke DeVoss went 1-4 with 2 strikeouts. Jorge Soler had a double and walk in a 1-3, 1 R performance. He also struck out once and drew the teams only walk. No other performance was really notable; the team struckout 8 times, walked once, and had only 2 extra base hits, a double by Soler and Chad Noble. Zach Cates couldn't get out of the first innings. His line: 0.2 IP, 3 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 3 BB, 1 SO, 1 HR. He gave up a grand slam to Yankees farmhand Jose Toussen, a nobody. Hunter Cervenka came in relief and walked 3 and struck out 1. He didn't allow a hit in his 2.1 innings of work. Luis Liria gave up a single run in 3.1 innings of work, as did  Frank Del Valle in 2.2 innings. As a team, the D-Cubs walked 12 batters and struck out 8. That's not a recipe for success. The Daytona Cubs are 7-8. Quad Cities @ Kane County Postponed.   The post JOT: Cubs Minor League Recap 4-19-13 appeared first on Obstructed View.

2013 MLB Draft: Potential Penalty Figures for Cubs

Last year MLB and the MLBPA agreed to some draconian rules regarding the draft. Gone were the days when you could spend whatever you want. You might think that MLB may have adopted some penalties that may still have allowed teams to go over their first 10-rounds budget, but they made the penalties so damn harsh that they essentially eliminated the possibility. Here are the basics...

Giants Pitchers Throw One-Hitter at Cubs En Route to DH Sweep at Indian School Park

John Polonius (two RBI doubles) and Shilo McCall (a three-run HR and an RBI FC) knocked-in four runs a piece, leading the Giants to an 11-2 victory over the Cubs on Field #1, and Seven Neff and three relievers combined to toss a one-hit shutout, as the Giants blanked the Cubs 2-0 on Field #2, in Cactus League Extended Spring Training doubleheader action this morning at Indian...

Big Gun Balaguert Satisfies Need for Offense at Fitch Park

Shawon Dunston Jr reached base four times on three singles and a walk, scored twice, and drove-in a run, Yasiel Balaguert singled twice, tripled, and knocked-in four runs, and Jacob Rogers smacked a two-run triple and walked, leading one squad of Cubs to a 7-3 victory over one squad of Diamondbacks on Field #3, and Francisco Sanchez hammered a two-run triple and then scored on...

Does adding Julio Borbon mean the end of the southpaw lineup?

The Cubs claimed speedy centerfielder Julio Borbon off of waivers yesterday. Borbon made himself known amongst the Cubs faithful by being caught stealing to end the game. Prior to that there was a lot of speculation about the roster move to clear a space on both the 40 man and 25 man rosters. Many speculated that Borbon addition would mean the end of Dave Sappelt in the lineup...

JOT: Cubs Minor League Recap 4-20-13

Iowa Cubs 5 @ Memphis Redbirds 8 Logan Watkins had a Logan Watkins-type day, going 1-4 with a double and a walk. He also struck out twice. He was also caught stealing. He actually hasn't stolen a base all year and has been caught thrice. Brett Jackson 2: The Secret of the lOoze pinch-hit and had a single. He'd come around to score. Ian Stewart brought his average up...

Cubs Progress Report 1

Now that the Cubs have completed 10% of their season (well, they've been rained out twice), I thought it'd be nice to give a review of how the Cubs have done so far this year. This should be a fairly long post and will focus exclusively on the major league roster. Record Cubs Actual Record: 5-9 Runs Scored/Allowed: 50/60 PythagenPat Win Percentage: .418 PythagenPat Expected...

Journeymen of Tomorrow: Week 3 Prospect Watch

Each Saturday, I'm going to summarize the weekly performance top prospects at each level. Hopefully, this will give more of a snapshot of how our future Cubs are doing. AAA Brett Jackson 2: The Two Flounders has come to a 31.9% K rate this season. That's not appreciably lower than his 33.8% AAA rate last year. His line of .244/.340/.366 is held up by a .385 BABIP, so something...

**** You Dale Sveum

It's been a few years since I busted out one of these but the ******** that was Dale Sveum's comments today about Castro & Rizzo has enraged me to the point of typing about it so here we go.  **** you Dale Sveum. **** you and your ********* pontifications about "accountability" and performance. If you really think that Starlin Castro & Anthony Rizzo belong...

Prospect Stock Watch – 04/19/13

Javier Baez, SS, Chicago (NL) Baez, 20, hit .333 at the low-A ball level in 2012 but he did it while walking just nine times in 57 games. He then finished his injury-shortened season with another 23 games in high-A ball but struggled. His plate issues have continued into 2013 with 18 strikeouts and two walks in 58 at-bats. While his aggressive nature has not helped his batting average...

Chicago Cubs Injury Update, April 20

Matt Garza Starting pitcher Matt Garza threw two innings of a simulated game on April 19 without incident. He is scheduled to throw a total of four simulated games, working his pitch count up gradually throughout each of them. His next game calls for three innings or a total of 45 pitches. Cubs’ manager Dale Sveum said that Garza threw well but had control issues. That...

The One Where Ricketts Might Be Up to Something

Since taking over as owner of the Chicago Cubs in 2009, Tom Ricketts and his family have spoken at great lengths about how they are going to do whatever they could to bring the long coveted World Series Championship to the city of Chicago, and to the long suffering Cubs fans. In order to do this, he has needed the Cubs fans to buy into his plan, show some patience and let him and...

Sveum gets tossed

What do you call this stretch of time in Chicago Cubs' history anyway?(I'm talking about the team playing in the Major League ballparks, of course.)Is it The Intermission?Growing Pains? The 105th Year Stretch?Even though most of us kind of shrug through these games, it's nice to see some kind of emotion displayed once in awhile.Which was why I was so happy to watch an...

Chicago Cubs Claim Julio Borbon Off Waivers

MLB News: Julio Borbon was claimed off of the waiver wire by the Chicago Cubs from the Texas Rangers Friday. Spending his whole career in the Texas system, Borbon has a solid glove, but very little power and while he possesses very nice speed, his knowledge of the art of running has a few holes in it. There have been plenty of gems that were found on the waivers after being cast...

Sunday Game Thread: Cubs (5-11) v. Brewers (8-8)

The Brewers go for the series sweep, their 7th win in a row overall, and their 17th win in the last 22 meetings with the Cubs. Is that depressing enough for you? Cubs v. Wily Peralta (0-1, 6.19; pitched well but took an ND in 4/9 game at Wrigley which his bullpen blew for him): DeJesus 8, Castro 6, Rizzo 3, Soriano 7, Schierholtz 9, Castillo 2, Valbuena 5, Barney 4, Feldman 1. Brewers...
