Iowa Cubs 3 @ Oklahoma City RedHawks 4 Snore. Logan Watkins did well, going 2-4 with a double. Donnie Murphy tripled. Ty Wright singled and homered, and Darnell McDonald doubled, walked, and singled. That's it. Mike Olt was 0-4 with another strikeout. Brooks Raley was very serviceable, allowing 2 runs in 6.2 innings. He walked 3 and struck out 2. Flamethrower Henry Rodriguez coughed the game up with a run in the 8th and 9th. Birmingham Barons 4 @ Tennessee Smokies 8 Arismendy Alcantara had a great game. He went 3-4 with a walk and 4 RBI, all of them coming with 2 outs. Awesome to see. Javier Baez was 0-4 with a walk and a strikeout. He also had his 4th fielding error. Christian Villanueva was 2-4 with a run scored. Rubi Silva, Brett Jackson, and John Andreoli all singled and scored a run (Andreoli scored 3, walked, stole a base, and was hit by a pitch). Rafael Lopez went 2-3 with a double, walk, and 2 RBIs.  Dae-Eun Rhee was awesome through 6, and ended up leaving a line similar to Raley's; 6.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 5 SO, 1 HR. Hunter Cervenka coughed up a run in 0.2 innings, as did Frank Batista in 2.0 innings.  Daytona Cubs 0 @ Fort Myers Miracle 5 Zeke DeVoss had more hits than the rest of the Cubs combined, going 3-4 with a pair of doubles. Apparently, Anthony Giansanti is just a second baseman now; he drew a walk. Wes Darvill doubled and Taiwan Easterling tripled; 4 of the Cubs' 5 hits were for extra bases, but they still did not score. Scott Baker continued his rehab with an ok-ish start. In 3.1 innings, he allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 3 hits and 2 walks. He also gave up a home run and fanned 2. Yao-Lin Wang allowed 2 hits and a walk in .2 innings, but surrendered no runs of his own. Pierce Johnson went 4 innings and was knocked around for 3 innings; he allowed 6 hits and 2 walks, striking out 7. Kane County Cougars 1 @ Peoria Chiefs 14 Dan Vogelbach hit his 16th home run. That's about it. Jose Rosario allowed 13 runs in 4.2 innings. That's about it. Spokane Indians 5 @ Boise Hawks 2 (11 innings) Kris Bryant only gets extra base hits. He doubled and walked (and struck out). Yasiel Balaguert went 0-4 with 2 strikeouts. Jose Dore singled for the only other Boise hit (though as a team, they walked 9 times).  Tyler Skulina had a really nice start, pitching 3 scoreless on 2 hits, no walks, 2 strikeouts. Michael Wagner wasn't so good, allowing 5 baserunners in as many outs, allowing a run and punching 3 out. Loiger Padron allowed a run in a trio of innings. My main man Carlos Martinez-Pumarino took the loss, because it was getting late. He probably had a dinner appointment with a foreign dignitary he didn't want to miss. Jasvir Rakkar cleaned it up. I just want CMP to get to a league where I can see his name on the back of the jersey. That's all I need. Way Too Early Look at 2014 Cubs

Well, the Cubs didn't trade anyone today. With DeJesus and Schierholtz in the fold for 2014 (though either could be traded in the offseason, I really doubt it), the Cubs 2014 roster (with no signings) looks like this: C: Welington Castillo 1B: Anthony Rizzo 2B: Darwin Barney SS: Starlin Castro 3B: Mike Olt LF: Junior Lake CF: David DeJesus RF: Nate Schierholtz 2B/CF:...

JOT: Cubs Minor League Recap 7-30-13

Iowa Cubs 4 @ Salt Lake Bees 5 I. Don't. Care. And neither do you. Mike Olt went 1-4, but every time he didn't single, he struck out. Logan Watkins also singled, as did a bunch of other people. What do you want from me? At least Jae-Hoon Ha doubled and homered; Edwin Mayonnaise and Luis Flores doubled too. The I-Cubs struck out 14 times and walked twice. Yoanner Negrin looked...

JOT: Cubs Minor League Recap 7-28-13

Iowa Cubs 3 @ Oklahoma City RedHawks 4 Cubs outhit the RedHawks 9 to 7 in this one. Mike Olt went 0-4 with a strikeout, and Logan Watkins went 0-5. Watkins has a .508 after the ASB and a .556 OPS since July. Hopefully he gets back on the train soon, because Alcantara is not far behind him as 2Bs go (though the way is relatively clear at CF). Jae-Hoon Ha, seemingly forgotten...

Sveum: Samardzija deal 'not realistic'

Chicago Cubs starter Jeff Samardzija has shrugged off trade rumors and manager Dale Sveum said Sunday that any rumor about his right-hander being dealt is “silly.” Yet the Cubs listened to Arizona when the Diamondbacks asked their asking price for Samardzija and other teams have inquired as well. CBSSports.com’s Jon Heymnan wrote the only reason the Cubs “are looking around...

Chicago Cubs prospect profiles: Amaya, Balaguert and more

Yesterday, we featured two players from each of the Chicago Cubs’ three upper-tier minor league teams, Iowa, Tennessee and Daytona.  Today, we feature two players apiece on the rosters of their lower-level teams, Kane County, Boise and the Arizona Rookie League Cubs. KANE COUNTY COUGARS Armando Rivero:  RH relief pitcher Rivero pitched a couple of seasons professionally...

Cubs listened to offers for Jeff Samardzija

Although trade conversations really didn't go anywhere the Chicago Cubs did listen to offers for starter Jeff Samardzija before the non-wavier deadline expired Wednesday. In the real world of baseball business it is incumbent upon top executives to listen to offers on any and all of their players. In the sensitive world of long-term contracts and player control the issues can...

Body of ex-MLB pitcher found in lake

Authorities have recovered the body of former major league pitcher Frank Castillo after he apparently drowned Sunday at a lake northeast of Phoenix. Maricopa County sheriff's officials say divers pulled the 44-year-old's body out of Bartlett Lake on Monday afternoon. Family members and friends say Castillo wasn't a good swimmer, but he jumped off a pontoon boat Sunday...

Former Red Sox GM Theo Epstein’s Brookline Mansion Up for Sale (Photos)

Theo Epstein left the Boston Red Sox about two years ago, but he didn’t leave Boston for good. During the MLB offseason, he and his family would retreat to their Chestnut Hill, Mass., home and take in the sights of the city Epstein once helped bring the Commissioner’s Trophy to. Now, it seems as if Epstein is ready to sever all ties. The Chicago Cubs president of baseball operations...

Happy Trade Deadline Day

TheJedi have already knocked out a number of trades that today shouldn't bring too much excitement, but there's still a few pieces left on the trading block. The most likely is Nate Schierholtz whom Jayson Stark reiterates is the most likely Cub to be dealt today. The Pirates and Rangers seem like the most likely spots at the moment. Heyman says Jeff Samardzija won't...

A snapshot of how depressing the Cubs are

Sitrick had a nice tweet about how Starlin Castro (I first typed Stalin Castro and really thought about keeping it) leads the team among qualified Cubes in batting average. I wanted to see how that stacked up this year, and found that Castro is 29th among team-leaders. Adeiny Hechavarria is 30th and the only Marlin with enough PA to qualify. Name Team G PA AVG Miguel Cabrera...

Trade Values: David DeJesus

This morning Ken Rosenthal said that the Cubs were shopping David DeJesus and Nate Schierholtz. I did a trade value on Schierholtz a few weeks ago, noting that it would probably take a Grade B hitting prospect to land him. Let’s take a look at the value of DeJesus, which will provide a better opportunity to compare both players. NOTE: The purpose here isn’t to suggest the Pirates...
