Iowa Cubs @ Albuquerque Isotopes
Jake Arrieta's Iowa debut was suspended in the top of the second, which is great because Arrieta was on his way to a blowup second, giving up a hit and 2 walks without getting an out. It's also great because I-Cubs.
Huntsville Stars 1 @ Tennessee Smokies 3
Arismendy Alcantara went deep for the 12th time Friday in a 2-4 day, adding a double and a SB for good measure. Alcantara had the Smokies' only 2 XBHs on the day. John Andreoli and Christian Villanueva were both 2-3, with Andreoli swiping a bag. No Smokies walked on the day.
Alberto Cabrera was damn good, allowing a run on 4 hits and 2 walks in 7.2 IP, striking out 7. Cabrera's been on a particularly hot streak lately, giving up 2 runs or less in 8 of his last 10 starts, posting a 2.73 ERA in 66 innings, striking out 65 and walking 3 per nine. Kyle Hendricks gets all the good pub, but don't sleep on Cabrera, who's missing more bats and has been just a notch less dominant.

Baseball America's international free agency guru Ben Badler was on the Baseball America Podcast today, where he discussed many of the issues we've been debating around these parts related to the Cubs' sticky situation. It was a very informative interview, so I have transcribed extensively. To date, Badler has correctly predicted the signing team for 20 of the...

Edwin Jackson had one of his better outings of the year, allowing a solo home run and nothing else on 4 hits and 2 walks...
There are way too many storylines to go through this time of year. Between the promotion and successes of various Cubs prospects in the minor leagues, the impending trades of certain Cubs assets such as Matt Garza, the international free agent signing period and the still-unsigned Cubs draft picks including Kris Bryant (we’ll know by 4 PM Central on Friday), we have a hefty slate...

David DeJesus has begun swinging off a tee. The outfielder has been on the disabled list since June 15 with a strained right shoulder.
Thus far there is no timetable for the return of DeJesus. The injury occurred on July 14 when DeJesus ran into the outfield wall trying to track down a would be triple off the bat of Juan Lagares of the Mets.
Chicago Cubs pitcher Matt Garza is one of the prized pieces available at this years deadline so there’s no doubt contenders will come calling. Today we’ve learned that the Washington Nationals have begun to show interest, although it’s not at the point where an official offer has been made.
Earlier today, Manager Davey Johnson called any discussion of the Nationals trading...

Has starting pitcher Matt Garza pitched his last game for the Chicago Cubs? ESPN's Buster Onley thinks that is possible. Olney tweeted Thursday that Garza may now be the best pitcher available after his dominating performance over the Oakland Athletics on July 3.
A dream scenario has developed for the Cubs: Matt Garza is now far and away the best starter available, and he...
In games decided by one run it takes just one mistake to change the outcome. In the Fourth of July game against the A’s, the Cubs came close to scoring a run in the fourth inning with Starlin Castro on second base. Alfonso Soriano hit a solid single into the outfield, and Castro was thrown out at the plate. That should be the end of it, but instead there seems to be controversy...
While he's attracting attention from other teams, Matt Garza claims to be focused on the next start for his current club.
The right-hander will seek to lead the Chicago Cubs to their first season sweep of the White Sox in 15 years in Monday night's makeup game at U.S. Cellular Field.
Garza's name has continued to swirl in trade rumors, but it's hardly hindered his...
