Wow, I just had another thought regarding the Red Sox-Yankees game from tonight. Here’s the situation:

Game tied 4-4

Top 9

A-Gon leads off the inning by working a walk.

Lars Anderson comes in to pinch run.

Why?

Last time I checked, Lars Anderson and Adrian Gonzalez have pretty much the same speed. It’s not like Anderson was coming in to steal second. He was coming in to try and score on a gap shot. I feel like in that situation, Tito has got to leave Gonzo in.

You just simply can’t take a bat like that out of the lineup in such a crucial game. Replacing the bat of Gonzalez is almost impossible.  He is that unique hitter that can hit for average, work many walks by being patient, drive the ball to the opposite field, and hit for power. Lars Anderson is none of those. Sorry, Lars, but it’s true.

This isn’t the only time Francona has pulled this stunt. I remember at least three other incidents earlier this summer.

Next time, Tito, you have to keep Gonzo in.
