Jordany Valdespin left Monday’s game after taking a fastball in an uncomfortable spot. (Photo courtesy MLB.com) Justin Verlander endured a rough spring training outing on Monday, allowing five runs in 4.1 innings of an 11-0 loss to the New York Mets. He still walked out of Joker Marchant Stadium feeling better than the Mets’ Jordany Valdespin. With Verlander’s day winding down in the fifth inning, Valdespin squared to bunt. Verlander’s 94-mph fastball sailed inside and caught Valdespin … well … Justin Verlander: “Right out of the hand, it’s like, ‘Oh, (expletive). That is right at his balls.” — Chris Iott (@Chris_Iott) March 11, 2013 Valdespin stayed down on the ground following the hit-by-pitch, then was replaced by a pinch-runner. Kenny Faulk took over for Verlander on the hill at that time, as well. The outing was the worst of the spring for the Tigers’ ace. But the incident with Valdespin still left just about everyone chuckling. Question: “Have you ever …” Justin Verlander interrupts. “Hit somebody in the nuts? No.” #Tigers — Chris Iott (@Chris_Iott) March 11, 2013 Valdespin confirmed later that he had avoided injury. Valdespin: ““Everything is good, working good, normally, everything is great.” — Mike Puma (@NYPost_Mets) March 11, 2013 However, Valdespin may rethink his decision not to use one particular piece of equipment Monday: Mets aren’t happy with Valdespin’s judgement – he wasn’t wearing a cup, I was just told. — Mike Puma (@NYPost_Mets) March 11, 2013 The Tigers and Mets play again on March 14 and 24, both times at New York’s home stadium in St. Lucie, Fla.
