Justin Verlander put in a performance for the ages on Tuesday night. Dominant does not even begin to describe it. Verlander absolutely owns in the Oakland A’s.
Over the past two years when the Tigers faced the A’s in the ALDS, Verlander has made 4 starts. Here are the lines from those starts.
October 6, 2012: 7.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 4 BB, 11 K
October 11, 2012: 9.0 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 11 K
October 5, 2013: 7.0 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 11 K
October 10, 2013: 8.0 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 10 K
The last three starts have been at O.Co Coliseum where Verlander has been dominant. The Oakland A’s Wikipedia page even was jokingly changed to say that Justin Verlander owns the Oakland A’s.
The raucous fans at the Coliseum tried to get into Verlander’s head by bringing cutouts of Verlander’s ex-girlfriend and Sports’ Illustrated Swimsuit model Kate Upton, but that was unsuccessful to say the least. If Verlander even noticed the cutouts, it would only have helped fuel his fire.
With his lackluster performance this year and the emergence of Max Scherzer, people said that Verlander was not the ace of this staff. Verlander is the ace of this staff. When he is right, Justin Verlander is the best pitcher on this team. He is the best pitcher in the American League. Clayton Kershaw is the only pitcher in Justin Verlander’s league and the Oakland A’s learned this the hard way.
