Remember before last season when experts were all lauding the job the Kansas City Royals had done compiling the consensus No. 1 farm system in all of baseball? Apparently that doesn’t actually translate into wins on the field.

So far in 2012, the Royals have shown themselves to be old-school bad. We’re talking 1890 Pittsburgh Alleghenys, 1899 Cleveland Spiders, 1962 New York Mets bad. They have opened the season with a dismal 3-14 record, which is easily the worst in baseball so far. And on Tuesday night they dropped their 12th-straight contest.

The game was as ordinary as any of the previous 11, as Kansas City lost a 4-3 decision to the Cleveland Indians. But when you string those “ordinary” losses together, one after another, things tend to get really ugly.

For his part, Royals manager Ned Yost is trying to stay positive saying, “We were one hit shy, but golly we were into it to the very end.” Translation: Can we please win a damn game?

Yost also insisted that the Royals are playing too well to have lost 12-straight. Ned, I assure you, that is not the case.

Kansas City also managed to lose 12-straight games in both the 1997 and 2008 seasons, while losing 13-straight in 2006 and a team-record 19 in a row in 2005. So, really this shouldn’t be a big deal to Royals fans. Actually, for them this is barely a slump.

During the 12-game losing streak Kansas City has been outscored 73-44, but five of the losses have come by just one run. I actually think that is a bad omen, as a team’s record in close games often dictates future success.

The Royals vented their frustrations in a closed-door pregame meeting on Monday, during which voices reportedly were raised in anger. Guess that didn’t help. Maybe Yost should try scaring them like manager Joe Reardon in “Bull Durham.”

Right now the only consolation for Royals fans is that things could be worse. Much, much worse. The sad part is that if anyone is fully aware of that fact, it’s Royals fans.
