Okay, so it looks like we’ve got ourselves a 2nd baseman. Sorry, Luis Valbuena. While this decision from Johnson would have seemed very unlikely earlier this week (it seemed he would probably have gotten a multi-year deal from one team or another), things turned headed to last night’s arbitration acceptance deadline, with GM Alex Anthopoulos acknowledging that Johnson was, in fact, likely to stay with the Blue Jays for at least one more year. The contract that Johnson gets from arbitration will be non-guaranteed. The 29-year old made $5.85 million last season, and will likely receive a raise for next season. For the Blue Jays, this is a good thing, as Johnson would have been probably the best remaining option out there in FA, barring a trade to bring in a 2nd baseman. The move will relegate the recently acquired Valbuena to the bench, and will also require the Blue Jays to clear a spot from their 40-man roster. We’ll likely find out who that player will be soon eno...

Francisco, Rauch Officially Departs From Blue Jays

I guess the Mets really liked the performance the Blue Jays bullpen put on last year, eh? That might explain why they’ve gone ahead and started a bullpen overhaul by signing both Frank Francisco and Jon Rauch. Francisco received a 2-year, $12 million dollar deal, while Jon Rauch signed for $3.5 million. Jokes aside, I think the deal for Francisco is actually about right. Despite...

Video: Jon Rauch Ejection

The best first and probably least significant move of the night was the signing of former Toronto Blue Jay, Jon Rauch. Listed at 6'10", Rauch is an imposing figure who has pitched to a 3.82 ERA over nine seasons in the big leagues.Known as much for his tattoos as his pitching prowless, Rauch had a down year in 2011 after being fairly consistent over a previous period of...

Toronto Blue Jays Close Deal for Sergio Santos

It looks like it’s case closed for the Toronto Blue Jays as they finally landed a relief pitcher for next season. The Jays announced on Dec. 6 that they had received right-handed reliever Sergio Santos from the Chicago White Sox in a deal that saw Minor League pitcher Nestor Molina head to the Windy City. Santos had a decent year with Chicago by saving 30 games in 36 opportunities...

Rauch, Francisco hit the Trails

The New York Mets signed both John Rauch and Frank Francisco away from the Blue Jays, for $3.5 million/1 year and $12 million/2 years. Rauch and Francisco were both type B free agents that were offered arbitration, so the Blue Jays will receive two compensatory picks in the second round for losing them. The Jays will also receive a compensatory pick from losing Bengie Molina...

Re-stating the case for Darvish

I find myself compelled to address again the Yu Darvish speculation. Based on a number of comments and observations, particularly over the last week, several prominent members of the local Toronto media and apparently most fans have concluded that the team will not be serious players for Darvish, while national (American) media figures persist in listing the Jays among the obvious...

Toronto designates Jeroloman for assignment

Backup catcher Brian Jeroloman was designated for assignment by the Blue Jays late Wednesday night.

Blue Jays 2B Johnson to accept arbitration

Toronto Blue Jays second baseman Kelly Johnson is staying put. Johnson, 29, has accepted the team's arbitration offer on a one-year deal. Acquired from the Arizona Diamondbacks in August, Johnson belted 21 homers and had 58 RBIs in 2011. He fared well in Toronto, batting .270 with three homers and nine RBIs in 33 games. In his first 114 contests in Arizona last season, Johnson batted .209.

Red Sox Bring In Jesse Carlson

In a move that sent approximately zero shock waves through the baseball world, the Red Sox signed former Jays left-handed reliever Jesse Carlson to a split contract this week. It was such a big story that it wasn’t even reported on MLB Trade Rumors for well over a day after the news of the signing first broke. While this transaction has flown under the radar for obvious reasons...

KJ Likes Arby's

Sportsnet's Shi Davidi says second baseman Kelly Johnson has accepted arbitration from the Blue Jays.Kelly Johnson on JaysVision during lineup introductions against the Yankees September 18. The 29 year-old, acquired from Arizona for second baseman Aaron Hill and shortstop John McDonald in late August, made $5.85-million in 2011. Kelly Johnson will get to exchange more high...

Sandy on last night’s trade, the bullpen and what’s next

Sandy Alderson talked with reporters today and said last night’s trade came together in an hour and a half, with both teams meeting earlier in the night. According to Alderson, how Frank Francisco, Jon Rauch and Ramon Ramirez are used in the bullpen will be up to Terry Collins. However, he said, ‘There will be a soft hierarchy.” Next, he said, he must focus on...

Mets sign closer Francisco, Rauch and trade Pagan

DALLAS — Summarizing just part of a wild night, the Mets traded with San Francisco, signed a Francisco and won’t be reunited with Francisco (Rodriguez). The Mets’ big splash, a two-year deal worth $12 million with closer Frank Francisco, completed a frenzy that won’t overshadow Jose Reyes’ departure to...
