ST. LOUIS -- The Cardinals didn't just end their seven-game losing streak Thursday night at Pittsburgh. They stomped it into the Allegheny River with a 13-0 romp over the Pirates that included 17 hits and a strong start by Joe Kelly. Four more numbers to take away: No more seeking a No. 5 Even before the offense broke out against Charlie Morton, not all of the Cardinals were having a miserable trip. Right-hander Joe Kelly shut out the Braves for 6 13 innings last Saturday, but that paled to his contribution Thursday when he worked six scoreless innings in what he called a high-energy, high-focus outing. Though Mike Matheny likes having Kelly as a long reliever, the 25-year-old right-hander has a starter's stuff. His secondary pitches weren't particularly sharp against the Pirates but he still thrived behind a fastball that averages nearly 95 mph. "He was very good, he had a real good fastball going," Matheny said in post-game remarks shown on Fox Sports ...

Why did the Cardinals wait so long to use Joe Kelly in the rotation?

What took you so long? That is the question many Cardinals fans are probably asking John Mozeliak and Mike Matheny after Joe Kelly turned in another strong performance tonight, leading the Cards to victory over the Pirates and ending the team's 7-game skid. Kelly pitched 6 scoreless innings, giving up just 3 hits and striking out 4.  Although he also walked 4 hitters, he kept...

Is Adron Chambers the spark the St. Louis Cardinals need?

With Yadier Molina and Shane Robinson being placed on the 15-day disabled list, the St. Louis Cardinals have called up Adron Chambers and Brock Peterson from Triple-A Memphis. With the offense scoring a grand total of six runs in the past six games (all losses), the team obviously needs a spark. Thus, can Chambers be the spark the team needs? In 326 at-bats for the Memphis...

McNeal: Cards are quiet at trade deadline, and wisely so

ST. LOUIS -- So the Cardinals didn't make a significant trade before the deadline for the first time since 2008. I say good for them. As sharp as Cliff Lee would look wearing the Birds on the Bat, the Cardinals never were close to a deal, according to a Phillies source. If the Cardinals weren't going to mortgage a big chunk of their future on Lee, no other available...

'Star Wars Night' inspires creative blends of Cardinals and intergalactic characters

ST. LOUIS -- The Cardinals are hosting "Star Wars" night at Busch Stadium next Wednesday, and a couple of self-described "Stars Wars" nerds on the FOX Sports Midwest staff -- producer Max Leinwand and graphics operator Keith O'Brien -- have been amusing themselves with the possibilities. What do you get when you cross Jon Jay with Han Solo? Jon Solo. Adam...

CardinalsFarm minor league player of the month

With a new month comes a look back at the last. While doing research to find the minor league player of the month, there were several players who had very solid months. Let’s take a look at the runners-up first. Adron Chambers had  a very solid month of July, that may have been part of the reason for his July 31st call up to the big leagues. Chambers will take the spot of Shane...

Cardinals 13, Reds 3

David Freese set the tone with a bases-loaded double in the first inning, and Daniel Descalso hit two of the Cardinals' three homers on Friday night as St. Louis pulled away to a 13-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. The Cardinals have emerged from a deep hitting slump by scoring 13 runs in each of their last two games. It's the first time this season they've had double...

The finishing touch

I'm not sure why, but as a Pirate fan, I want this fifth win over the Cardinals every bit as bad as I wanted the first four. The Pirates have made a statement in this series regardless of what happens in tonight's game, but a five-game sweep would be one of the most emphatic statements I can remember happening in recent years. I'm being greedy and I know it, but one thing...
