Article courtesy of FOX Sports Midwest Producer Max Leinwand. ST. LOUIS - Adam Wainwright came up for two games in 2005, and in two innings, didnt strike out a batter. But he eventually got career strikeout number one in game one of the 2006 season against the Phillies. That was one of 72 strikeouts in 75 innings of relief work in 2006 - a rate of 8.64 per nine innings. Since 2006 wainwrights 999 strikeouts are the 9th most in the national league, and thats after missing an entire season. Hes struck out more than 200 batters twice in a season, 2009 and 2010, when he fanned 212 and 213 respectively. Waino owns the single season, 125 strikeouts, and career, 538 strikeouts, K-records at the new Busch Stadium. His most frequent victims have been the Milwaukee Brewers. Hes got 139 ks against the Brew Crew, nearly one-seventh of his career total. Hes whiffed Ryan Braun 15 times, and Prince Fielder and Rickie Weeks 14 times each. In fact, he struck out a career-high 5-straight batters against Milwaukee back on July 18th, 2012. Wainos got 504 strikeouts against lefties, 495 against righties and 372 during the day, 627 at night. Hes struck out 164 batters in the 2nd inning, the most of any frame, and hes got 313 with no outs, 321 with one out and hes struck out the final batter of an inning 365 times. Hes also struck out the side in an inning 26 different times. 712 of Wainwrights strikeouts have come swinging, 284 have been looking, and 3 have been on foul bunts. What about by pitch? Not surprisingly, Wainos curveball has been the author of more than half of his 999 strikeouts. 504 times the Cardinals' ace has sat someone down with his hook. Thats followed by his fastball, which he has blown by people for strike three 266 times. 875 of Wainos Ks have come with Yadier Molina behind the plate. And Rob Drake has been behind Yadi for 41 of Wainwrights strikeouts, which is the most of any umpire. Incredibly, Wainwright had just one start in which he didnt strike out a single batter. But through his career, hes struck out one in every five batters hes faced - three percent better than the league average. Adam Wainwright will undoubtedly become one of five men to wear the birds on the bat to reach 1000 strikeouts. The question now, is just how high that total will go.
