PLAYERS: Ian Kinsler
TEAMS: Texas Rangers
I forgot to mention today’s good news in my game post, but this is probably worthy of it’s own entry anyway. IAN KINSLER IS A RANGER FOR FIVE MORE YEARS! Yes, that deserves all caps.  Because I was definitely shouting it in my head. News of the extension began making its way around the interwebs on Monday night.  Five years for $75 million.  The contract begins in 2013, with a club option for 2018. Not bad for a 17th round draft pick who made the rounds at three different colleges. I’m extremely happy about this news.  I am quite fond of Ian Kinsler. Sure, his pouty face gets annoying.  And his popups make me want to punch babies.  But I’m really glad to have him in the Rangers infield and lineup.  Oh, and he’s also one of the few Rangers with whom I have a picture. I’m glad we get to keep him for awhile longer. Me and Ian in 2006 -- when he was just a rookie.

Kinsler deal a steal for the Rangers

Three baseball fans are sitting in a sports bar talking baseball. One proclaims, "Cano and Pedroia are the two best second basemen in baseball." The second fan lets out a whoop and raises a beverage. The third, who is sitting with head down on folded arms pondering fantasy baseball picks, adds, "and Kinsler." The first two look at the third like seeing an alien...

Would you believe there’s a semi-pro ball team in Kansas named the Bee Jays?

Best baseball team name ever?  Best baseball team name ever. Yes Virginia, there really exists a semi-pro baseball team named the Bee Jays, and if that weren’t spectacular enough, would you believe they hail from the quaint midwestern town of Liberal, Kansas?  While it’s easy, and quite fun, to laugh at the Liberal Bee Jays and their hilarious name, it’s not so easy to mock...

Ian Kinsler Gets Paid

For the last few seasons, Ian Kinsler has been one of the more under-appreciated stars in Major League Baseball. From 2009 to 2011, Kinsler produced +15.8 WAR for the Rangers, putting him in a near dead heat with Robinson Cano (+16.4) and Dustin Pedroia (+16.2) at second base, and ranking him ahead of high profile players such as Prince Fielder (+15.3), Matt Kemp (+14.3), and even...

Dustin Pedroia's Value Continues to Skyrocket Following Brandon Phillips, Ian Kinsler Contracts

When Dustin Pedroia was awarded with the AL MVP following the 2008 season, the Boston Red Sox made sure to lock up the then 25-year-old second baseman for as long, and as little as they could. The deal was for six years. The money, $40.5 million. It was a solid contract for a rising young star and came at a relatively reasonable price for the position and the time period. More than...

The Reds Strike Again: The Phillips Extension

It has been a good week to be a second baseman. On the heels of Ian Kinsler‘s big extension with the Rangers, Brandon Phillips received a roughly similar six-year, $72.5 million deal from the Cincinnati Reds. Unlike Kinsler’s five-year contract, which begins after this season, Phillips’ new contract begins this year. Does this make sense for the team given the Reds current...

Reds, Phillips agree to six year extension

Just a week after inking Joey Votto to a ten year contract extension, the Cincinnati Reds took another step to securing their future by signing second baseman Brandon Phillips to a six year contract extension, a day after the Rangers did the same with their second baseman, Ian Kinsler. The Phillips extension is just a hair less than Kinsler's, coming in at six years and $72.5...

Digging In: The Nature of Extensions

Extensions are all the rage in baseball, nowadays. In the last 24 hours alone, there have been three players inked: Brandon Phillips, Carlos Santana, and Ian Kinsler. That's not to mention guys like Matt Cain and Joey Votto, who signed mega-extensions last week. If one were to go back and think about an extension that might have started this whole craze to begin with, one can...
