He wouldn't, would he? Oh wait, it's Gibson? Never mind. Kirk Gibson totally would. The undertaker of understatement, the man who brought us the instantly quotable line "I'm not out here to win a beauty contest" is at it again. Gibson guided the Arizona Diamondbacks to an 11-3 victory over Texas on Thursday -- in lieu of attending son Cameron's graduation from Grosse Pointe South High School. As it turns out, Kirk Gibson doesn't find the achievement all that breathtaking. "You're supposed to graduate," he told reporters following the game. "His mom and the rest of the family will be there. He's coming to see me next week." An interesting take on the revered ritual, Kirk. The revelation does come on the heels of Wellesley High School's "You're not special" commencement speech that has recently gone viral. The video has racked up over 1 million views on YouTube in just over two weeks, with a simple, yet central, message to the graduates: You are supposed to be here. And now Kirk Gibson thinks so, too. Before we let Gibson's lack of enthusiasm surrounding the event paint a one-sided picture on the issue of graduation attendance, though, consider this: Maybe Gibson didn't want to miss out on history of another kind. Just two weeks ago, Gibson's former broadcasting partner in Detroit, Josh Lewin, now with the Mets, decided to forgo Johan Santana's June 1 start against the Cardinals to instead attend his daughter's high school graduation. That fateful Friday night, Santana tossed the first no-hitter in Mets franchise history. Gibson, it would appear, isn't taking those same chances. Cameron, by the way, was picked by the Diamonbacks in 38th round of last week's Amateur Player Draft. He also has an offer to play ball at his father's alma-mater, Michigan State.
