Cleveland, OH -- Corey Kluber pitched scoreless baseball into the eighth inning and Michael Bourn had a two-run, pinch hit double as the Cleveland Indians beat the Kansas City Royals 3-0 in the opening game of the final series before the All-Star break.
The Tribe offense struggled to get on base against Bruce Chen, who was making his first start of the season for the Royals. Chen allowed just one hit, a fifth inning double by Carlos Santana, and a walk over six innings of work.
"I did everything I could to help us win, but Kluber was just a little bit better," said Chen after the game.
Kluber (7-5, 3.88) allowed just three hits and struck out eight in seven and two-thirds innings. The right-hander, who has established himself as a solid middle rotation workhorse, ran into trouble just once in fifth.
"I stepped back and took a deep breath," Kluber said. "All I can do is calm down, execute pitches and get out of it."
